Buying a Vogue around 05 year

Hi All and good morning!
I currently own a RangeRover Sport but thinking of changing it for a L322 vogue on a 04 to 05 kinda year so thought I'd get on here and try get a bit advice and an idea wetha it's a good idea to change a Sport for a Vogue? I've always loved the Vogue shape
Are there any common faults with Vogues watch for?
What changes are made on the 2005 facelift compared to the pre facelift?
How reliable r they?
Is high miles an issue on these? Ie is there anything prone to going wrong when at certain miles?
Is a 2005 54 plate pre facelift different to an earlier car?

Thanx for any input offered, I've been on the rrsport forum now for quite sum time and know how helpfull people can be Rangey Sport OverFinch owner from the otherside

United Kingdom 2007 Range Rover Supercharged 4.2 SC V8 Java Black

Not sure of all the changes between the pre-2005 to 2005 onward cars but to name a few:
(1) Change of engines from BMW (4.4 V8 and 3.0 Td6) to Jag.
(2) Change of Navigation to touch screen.

I do not know of any difference between late pre-facelift cars compared to early pre-facelift cars. My Vogue 4.4 is for sale in the classifieds, just about to go in for an Inspection II service and open to offers.

Facelift was engine, gearbox, and many other areas, such as different EAS compressor pump, improved sound insulation, touch screen navigation...

If you get a 54 car you may have a touch screen pre-facelift.

I would say it's worth getting the facelift both for the more modern look, and more reliable gearbox, and greater economy.

High mileage not really an issue except in respect of the TD6 gearbox!

I think the TD6 engine was carried over until the TDV8, but it's a good enough engine. I may stand corrected if someone tells me the facelift TD6 also carried over the old gearbox? I would hope it got the 6 speed more reliable unit.

Common faults are electrical gremlins, and suspension problems, but nothing really to worry about, so long as you know what you're looking for and get a good un. Thumbs Up

I'd probably recommend a facelift 4.4 petrol, if you want economy get it LPG'd, it'll do better than a TD6, and it's a much nicer engine (apologies to all TD6 owners, no offence! Thumbs Up )

Make the move from a Sport, you won't regret it! Thumbs Up Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

I completely forgot about the new Gearbox, and more obviously the revised bodywork, which I have to admit is one of the best looking FFRR styles to this day.

Scotland 2007 Range Rover Vogue SE TDV8 Java Black

Face lift models with TD6 engines still have the GM gearbox, which I would avoid.

TD6 is just adequate, the TDV8 is very good and has the 6 speed box 56 TDV8 Vogue SE

Cheers guys! Is the td6 gearbox a common issue? Petrol engine is something to think about! I had a BMW X5 petrol and got it lpg'd and it was great, Do the rangerover engines handle the LPG conversion ok? Dont they overheat or sum thing? Sensors and electrics seem to be an issue on all range rovers don't they! We get the same faults on the sports but fingers crossed mines been fine Rangey Sport OverFinch owner from the otherside

I was determined to get the 06 MY facelift model when I was looking for mine. I too looked at all TD6, 4.4 (Jag) & TDV8 models. I ended up with a very good TD6 Vogue.

I seriously considered the 4.4, but couldn't have lived with the difference in mpg to the diesel. I was told by JE Engineering that whilst the Jag engine was very good, it didn't respond well to lpg conversions and would probably need new cylinder heads - you can buy a hell of a lot of diesel for that extra cost !

I discounted the TDV8 as my budget would have stretched to a high mileage car which I couldn't have got a warranty for. Oh, and the road tax was £200 higher for the year - I'd rather have that in my pocket than the Department of Potholes.

For all the gearbox woes of the TD6, I've got a cracking car which I thoroughly enjoy.

"You pays yer money and takes yer choice" !

Thumbs Up Where do you go after one of these . . . ?

United Kingdom 2005 Range Rover Vogue Td6 Bonatti Grey

Like tug i got a pre facelift TD6, mine has much higher miles on it though (124k when bought, 131k now) and still going ok. I got mine knowning i would struggle to get a warranty for it due to milage which is a bit of a shame really as it seems to be solid enough at the minute (runs and touchs lots of wood and tries to find a 4 leafed clover!)

The gearbox is a bit of a worry for me but im working my way through the only real fault i've had with it which it had when i bought it which was the lower tailgate not working which has thus far cost me about £40 and needs another few quid spending to repair.

Check out the MY RANGE ROVER section and see my posts as i've only had mine since the summer.

If your buying from a dealer expect to pay a premium, i got mine for £12900 but at a dealer would likely have been around £15k

So far over about 6k mine has averaged 19.5mpg according to the trip computer but that includes towing a 2 tonne twin axle caravan for 2 holidays with it so far and numerous return trips for the bits that fall off it Evil or Very Mad

Check for rust on the rear arch lips as they are starting to come through on mine now so its probably an age thing and poor design Sad

If you want to take the risk and can find a TDV8 I'd go for it as long as its solid its worth it as its much smoother than the TD6 and more economical and very nice with a retune i hear Smile

if you can visit a dealer and see if you like the interior of the facelift compared to the pre facelift as the seats are different and the interior itself.

Make sure its had its recalls as well and a full service history, at least landrover if not a specialist since the warranty ran out and make sure everything works or you know what it would cost to repair.

Check all the tyres match as this is often a give away that its been looked after on the cheap if the makes are different, and also make sure there is a good few mm of tread as the tyres aren't cheap, one reason why a lot of people goto Duckworths Dan and get a new set of alloys with tyres as they aren't far off the price of set of tyres Smile

Go over the acres of leather interior as marks and cuts can be hidden anywhere and while cheap enough to repair are a good haggling point.

Try and avoid normal LR dealers in this price range as you will tend to only get older low mile vehicles for much more money, specialists are better or taking the risk and going private/auction and buying a decent warranty afterwards. Also try Gaz on here as he always seems to have good FFRR around.

Some people have got SC and 4.4's on LPG without too many issues but if you want to convert one dont forget the big pitfall is reduced range on lpg and a smaller tank, circa 200miles per fill i think most get. Also go to a convertor that has already done one or more conversions on FFRR as it will mean less issues crop up.

And finally just do lots of reading on here and if you go to see one see if someone can help you look over it to make sure its half decent and ALWAYS expect there to be issues

Good summary KP.

Kensta, I'd say LPG on the facelift is a great option. Of course many people are put off by JE, but I'm sure you've seen many Sport owners also have the Supercharged converted without problem, and there are probably half a dozen of us just on this forum, who according to JE, have been living on borrowed time ever since the conversion, but not having any issues!

The Supercharged in particular can sometimes be had for very little money, and range is not really an issue, since it's wise to keep at least half a tank of petrol anyway, so you have a combined range of 350-400 if you use this and the LPG, and still save money compared to petrol or diesel versions.

Of course you're getting the flagship with (in my view), the best looks and handling as well, plus all of the toys!

Othwerwise as KP says, you can try your luck with a high mileage TDV8. I'd go S/C every time (as I have twice now!). Might as well have the ultimate version of the ultimate car! Thumbs Up Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

Just to clarify, Kingpleb, my car and I believe yours is what I'd refer to as the facelift model. ie smaller headlights and "kinked" front bumper. The VIN gives it away - it has 06A in it. I've seen late '54 and early '05 registered cars for sale advertised as "facelift" cars as they had the touchscreen audio/satnav.

Kensta, I've had mine since August last. It's now done 88k, bought with 74k. Before me it had one owner and had been serviced correctly at the supplyling dealer who subsequently sent me a printout of every penny spent on it - worth it's weight in gold to me !

I believe, but someone better informed than me may clarify, that the 06my cars had alot of Jag/Ford electronics as opposed to the early BMW equipment.

No regrets with my car, and I'd still give the Jag 4.4 V8 ago though . . . .

Thumbs Up Where do you go after one of these . . . ?

TugRR, i class mine as pre facelift as its got the mix and match bits n bobs but the full facelift is the TDV8 or MY06 onward where the interior is changed as well so a true facelift Smile

It horses for courses, TDV8 nice and gentle and everywhere sells diesel, LPG always provides fun when trying to find places to fill up and the price isn't as good compared to petrol as it used to be.

Dont get me wrong ive run LPG on a car for a LOT of miles and when i first had it done LPG was 30ish p/litre when optimax was 90p/l so the money saved was done very quickly. now its more like 70p/litre in most places and Vpower is about 130p/litre so just under 50% of the cost so payback isn't as quick as it used to be, specially when you reckon on at least £2k for a half decent install, thats £4k you'd need to spend in fuel in a year to make the saving and you still do use some petrol in with that as well unless you cold start on LPG everytime...

Cheers for all the help lads! How much ru looking at to get the Td6 gearbox repaired or repplaced with a recon if it does go? Is that the only major issue with the Vogue? Suppose if it got a decent warranty I wud have that covered anyway, I've got AA warranty on my sport at the mo and got a new battery fitted off them last month with no quibbles. Do the TD6 Vogues respond well to power chips and remaps for the mpg? Rangey Sport OverFinch owner from the otherside

Just thinking is the td6 gearbox made by BMW? I remember the older X5 gearboxes were prone to knacken up too! Rangey Sport OverFinch owner from the otherside

Probably £2k for a rebuild. A warranty could possibly claim a failed gearbox was wear and tear. Have you driven the TD6? Drive it as much as you can, you may like it, personally I really didn't. I found it just underpowered, and revs too high at motorway speeds, apparently they respond well to remaps, so see if you can try one which has been remapped.

What's your budget? That'll help narrow down your search! Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!
