Water Pump

Hello guys,

yesterday evening, when driving my RR in Paris, some white smoke went from the bonnet when I was stopped in the traffic... Confused

I did not had time enough to park the car before the same problem as describe in this thread happened :

http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic1985.h...olant+pump

Is the job as easy as it seems :

Unscrew the bolts, unplug the hoses, swap the pump, plug the hoses, put the new belt and fill coolant, or some removing steps are more complex ?

And, do I need something more than :

- the new pump,
- liquid coolant,
- new belt

Thanks for your advise

Its getting at the pump itself that will take all the time .

Its not a technically difficult job. Just follow the steps in the RAVE manual.

The hardest part may be removing the fan from the pump. Sometimes it'll undo easily, other times, its very fiddly and hard. I made a special tool for it. The last time I did it, i didn't take out the radiator.

Points that spring to mind:

1/4" socket set with extenders is easier to use for the 10mm bolts holding the pump on.
Small ratchet spanners also help for some bolts ( some of the bolt heads are hidden behind things )

When pulling the pump off, try to hold the pipes that go into the back of the pump in place and stop them moving forward.

Lube the new o-rings on the back of the pump with something slippy ( I think i used a very small bit of engine oil ). Its very easy for the pipes at the back to not seat correctly when putting the pump and they can cut and tear the o-rings - causing an immediate leak which you wont notice until everything it back together! ( been there ) V8 or else ...

See my "Thermostat" howto on the wiki for viscous fan removal and refitting .
