Top Radiator Hose Popping Off.

Right guys, I've been looking at a lovely 53 4.4 Vogue in Oslo Blue (same colour as my very first L322)

It needs a little tidying, but I have been offered it from a trusted seller who has been very honest and said that the top hose has popped off in the past.

I know of several things that can cause the top hose to blow, am I missing anything from my list:

    Blown head gasket causing a build up of pressure.
    Faulty pressure relief valve in the expansion bottle cap.
    Coolant over full.
    Failed metal clip holding hose to connector.
    Failed connector (hose to block) due to incorrect coolant type.
    Failing main coolant pump causing hot spots and build up of pressure.
    Failed aux coolant pump, partially blocking the flow (V. common on BMW's)


Have I missed anything?

Cracked block maybe as a side effect it has overheated....

also if the pump impellors have broken up they will be worming their way around the system until they stick and cause an undesigned hotspot and cause another overheat..

Poor coolant with no antifreeze and is possibly boiling up.

See how it goes when idling while you check it over. start it as soon as you get there and give it a few revs every now and again after a short test drive then check all the bits round it and if its gonna pop due to overheating it will do it then.

You're a ray of light aren't you!! LOL. You can be too honest sometimes!

Joking aside, thanks Very Happy I did run it today, but not drive it due to it having a near flat tyre and didn't want to damage the rim. For something with a potential HG failure it was VERY smooth at idle, I appreciate HG problems can only show themselves at higher temperatures/revs though.

I'm not aware of the M62 suffering from a cracked block if it overheats (due to the fact it doesn't use liners like the RV8 which expand & contract at different rates). Although obviously not impossible if completely abused whilst the needle is in the red etc!

Maybe my "Worst Case" should be to budget for a replacement engine then?

Hi Dan - In the market for another L322 then - Not going back to a P38 Laughing ?

Always difficult to say blind on a forum, but kingpleb has probably hit the nail on the head. You may need a cooling system rebuild. If it has been running hot and without the G48 coolant to lubricate and swell the O-rings then you are going to have issues. That stupid thermostat won't help either if it isn't working properly.

Anyone with T4 locally?

hi dan, you said it pops of sometimes, so does it run ok most of the time, this would rule out a few things...whats the condition of the pipe its self, is it an original. V8 facelift Range Rover Autobiography 22" wheels.

It looks original, as well as looking like THE original. So if the clip is worn then it may well just need replacing.

I'm not sure if it popped off once, or had a habit of popping off - I'll clarify this tomoz.

When I ran it up to temp it was running smoothly, no lumps at all etc. I will be viewing it again soon hopefully.

I'm under no illusions with this one, but then it's a good price...

Just need to make sure there is enough of a contigency budget for it.

Well how much does an engine out, engine in job run to these days considering you might get £30 scrap for the old one or more to sell it on for someone else to restore?

what's G48 fluid?

I have a coolant leak so interested in this topic.....

mine is being looked at free by my mates garage tomorrow.

they replaced the cap as it was cracked slightly but I think it's a bit more than that as it's losing fluid daily, but not massively....anyone wish to take a guess at mine also? all smug in my new plug!

I've looked at this as well as I was loosing coolant and thought it may have been a HGF. You can get a rubber bung with a liquid that goes in the expansion tank. When the engine is run the gas pass's through the liquid, if it changes colour you have a HGF, there oly cheap of eBay. You could also take the plugs out, if their steam cleaned they could indicate a leak. Water in you oil and vice versa. You could also use the hidden menu to see the actual engine temp to see if it's running high etc. mine runs at 97-99C on gas just to give you an idea. Swast (Adam) had his head gaskets changed about 12months ago and think it ran to about £1800-1900, so expensive but not extortionate. I would put money on the hose being Censored as I had mine on and off quite a bit and the hose to the altinator blew off. Replace the hose and not had a problem.
