V5C Question.

Ok, this isn't RR related, but I'm wondering if anyone can help. I bought my Escort at the end of October from a small back street type garage, the salesman didn't seem too bothered either way if he sold the car which is making me wonder about the following. I have a receipt signed from him, the previous and current MOT and almost a full V5C minus the yellow section.

As of yet, (almost 6 weeks since buying the car!) I haven't received the log book back in my name.

Am I right in thinking that the log book I have here needs to be filled in with my details as the new keeper and sent off as the dealer couldn't be bothered to do himself, or is it likely to be the original one that the previous owner gave the garage when they traded the car in and the yellow section only has been sent off to notify the DVLA that the car is in trade?

Does sending the yellow section ff from a dealer issue a new V5C or is it that the dealer keep the original log book ready for the new owner info to be filled in to be sent off?

I've bought and sold a few cars but never been given a full log book from a dealer or garage like this.

I'm confused as hell here, I'm reluctant to send this V5C off just yet in case there's a new one on it's way from the DVLA that dealer has organised.

My guess is the dealer wont bother to do anything with the paperwork. he probably didnt register it in his own name, and the previous owner sent his bit off to say he had sold it. Something similar happened to my wife recently, she had to chase it up herself with DVLA and eventually got the new docs in her own name. No longer FF owner but still interested. I had similar when I brought my Rangie.

Like you I was reluctant to send it off, but after waiting so long I did.

A few days later I got the new log book back from the DVLA in my name, and the day after another one! Reformed

If you still have the green NEW KEEP SUPPLEMENT fill that in and send it off but take a copy of it before doing so.

Keep the main section and your reciept to prove you own the car incase your pulled.

Generally the yellow bit just says to the DVLA that the car is 'IN TRADE' and thus no real owner.

The details on the green V5C you have at the moment are the last owner so at least you could give them a bell and see if there is anything wrong with the car they know of Smile

Cheers everyone, it seems more likely he couldn't be bothered, so I'll fill it out and send it off.

Would have been nice for him to tell me I need to send it off though Rolling Eyes 2006 Mercedes CLS

Wrong way round.

You keep the new keeper supplement, and you send off the main section. The new keeper supplement is all you need if you're pulled. In reality you're much more likely to get pulled if you do it as above. You'll get pulled at the moment because the car won't be correctly registered, and is likely to trigger an ANPR alert until you have it correctly registered. Once it's all correct, you won't have to worry.

These days, it's really not about what paperwork you have, it's what's on the computer system. If the computer system says something is wrong, it doesn't matter what paperwork you have, and waving a V5 in somebody else's name won't do you any favours. Send if off properly completed as per the instructions on the back. If in doubt, there's plenty of help online, or go to your local DVLA office. Thumbs Up Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!
