How is the sat nav arrival time calculated?

Is it just on average speed or is it based on a bit more intelligence like speed limits / average speed on different road types etc? Does it take TMC stuff into account too?

not sure exactly how its calculated but it seems to constantly adap. Mine has always been un-nervingly accurate, even when there's been traffic problems, I can ring home and tell the wife exactly when to have the dinner ready!  Discovery 4 HSE

The initial calculations are based on average road speeds for any given type of road. Then it will adapt itself to your current speeds/averages.

I always get a 20 min trip home, that turns itself into a 35 min after I enter the city on weekdays. On weekends its pretty much bang on.

Once I had a 300 km trip, 50% motorway and 50% main road. The clock started at 2h and i ended up arriving 30 min earlier... the effects of 90k limit and 140-150 actual speed....

As it constantly changes according to the varying conditions, you'll not notice massive differences in the arrival time unless you drastically alter course.

When we did the non stop run to the south of france in the summer it was bang on to the minute, and so it should be! Discovery 4 HSE
