Hi my car 3.6 TD V8 wouldn't start earlier, tried jump leads but no good, it could be the starting motor, if hitting it with a hammer doesn't work I will need a new one. My question is how much is a new one?

TRy taking off both the pos and neg cables, touching them together - I did this last night after mine wouln't start despite having loadds of power in the battery....... started first time.

Dunno why?

The Semi Skimmed i had recently did this.

Does yours make a click when you try to turn it over?

if so it could be something called a maxi fuse sat right next to the battery on the + lead.

Other option is the solenoid sticking on the starter and being an auto its not something that can be freed without giving it a whack while trying to crank it

Hi,thanks for all your help and suggestions re possible causes for car not starting.The breakdown truck connected jump leads but couldnt get it started,it kept making a clicking noise so was towed to the local garage.It turned out to be a flat battery.After charging I took it to a specialist who tested the battery further but said it was fine.So bit of a mystery how battery appears to be in good health now as I dont think I left anything on. The test will be tomorrow morning when set off for work at 7.........

Hi, I had the exact issue as you about a year and a half ago, to cut a long story short, where I went through the same as what you are going through, I replaced the battery and it's been 100% ever since. I too was told that the battery was fine, on 4 seperate occassions, by different people, some with so called special battery analysing tools, I would charge it, then the next day or maybe 2 days later it was flat again.....

Trust me.... replace the battery!!!! This is the last thing you need going into winter, and it wrecks your ownership of an otherwise great car, I was even beginning to think that I may have bought a pup!! For me, as I've said, i've had no issues battery related for the last year and a half, and still seems to be going strong.

By the way, my old battery was only 3 years old and together with "professional" opinions, thats what made me doubt that it was at fault MY2007 Vogue SE TDV8 - Tonga Green / Sand

The electrical system on these cars is very similar to the BMW E38 and E39 cars... And my experience with these is that they really take a lot of power to operate the electrical systems.

IF one of the cells is just slightly weak, it will not show under load tests but it will definitely keep the car from operating properly. Also it would you from being able to jump start the car.

First off I would make sure the terminals are tight, and it they are and the battery is still draining like it has been then just put in a new (good quality) battery.

I've just had to replace the battery on mine, its now 4 years old and has let me down a number of times. It even cut out after it had started from cold because there wasn't enough to run all the systems.

The Dealer says its totally back to normal (on my way to fetch it now).

At the end of the day, a new battery for one of these is a maximum of £140 from a dealer less online, its possible to fit it yourself, albeit a tight squeeze. Its worth it. Discovery 4 HSE
