2015 Range Rover Autobiography SDV8 Aruba

I'm using the original 7 spoke wheels, so original offset.

Currently running 265/50's and there it about 1cm of clearance on the fronts ... so will need to be careful abotu the newer tyres on the front.

Will stick my head under tomorrow morning and have a proper close look. V8 or else ...

I'm also perplexed as to why you'd buy this size. It invalidates your insurance if you make a claim and they notice. LR don't endorse them on the FF, I know, when I bought mine it had RRS size tyres, I demanded the LR Dealer put the proper size 20s on, after plenty of arguing they agreed when I asked them to write me a letter for my insurance company stating that, despite the fact that Land Rover themselves never fitted them to the FF, ever, that they were willing to go on record as saying these were ok for this car (speed and load ratings etc)

Of course, They weren't prepared to and put 4 new pirellis on Thumbs Up Discovery 4 HSE

Just out of curiosity - is there no way to have non factory accessories 'registered' for the vehicle in the UK?

Germany has a pretty sensible (if somewhat bureaucratic) system: accessory manufacturers can have their parts approved by the TüV for certain models or owners can have their mods accepted and all is good. This ensures that the cars traveling the autobahn at 130mph are by and large safe yet people aren't restricted to factory engineers imaginations. My old 911 had a 2 page registration document due to all the modifications Cool
The French have no real system for non OEM spec items. Anything non factory is considered illegal and supposedly invalidates the insurance. But they have the 'laissez faire' attitude to the point that the Controle Technique (MOT) station had a catalog of very non standard tire sizes they allow. So basically everybody does whatever they want. Including me with my 275/65 18s.

I would've thought things would be a bit more organized and sensible in the world's #1 country for home car builders.

It's a remote potential issue with insurers, nothing else.

I've modded cars for years, never been a problem as long as you inform insurers.

Told the insurance .. they were ok about it. Said I was fitting different tyres for the winter. They asked if they were going on the same rim ... said yes and they said that was ok.

Showed the wife. She asked: are you putting those on the current alloys?

Yes

Wife: So when it comes back to the summer, can we get some bigger alloys for the normal tyres then ? Laughing

heres a teaser before I head down to the garage to get them fitted:

OK - they are fitted, balanced ( just ) and on the car. Pics up tomorrow when its better light.

There is no doubt, they are at the limit of what the FFRR can handle in its stock form.

On the front struts, there is a plastic cone doodah which hangs down from the lower seat of the airbag. It looks like legs of an insert clip. This touched the tyre, so the excess of the cone bits was chopped back, and now nothing touches. Its about 6-8mm clearance from the side wall to the strut. and about 8-10mm to the base of the airbag seat. I've still to visually check if the wheels touch the lower arms on full lock, but a couple of full lock turns haven't felt anything obvious.

Rear, as per the start of this thread, the bulge for the fuel filler needs pulled out of the way by a few mm. I've done this as already suggested by using a single self tapper that pulls the wheel well plastic diagonally inwards towards the centre console of the car and screws into the petrol tank guard plastic. The screw misses the fuel filler itself fine no issues. This give just enough space for the tyre ... you're talking 5mm clearance ... its tight.

Driving wise, done a run to the airport with them on ( mixture of all sorts of roads from country lane to motorway ) Its pretty much as expected really from my experience of MT and big chunky tyres on various off roaders I've had over the years. They feel a little slower, a little spongier and softer on cornering. There is also a bit of road noise humm once you get past 60mph.

Overall? Initially very pleased ... will do the job nicely for my needs. ... which brings me onto answering RRUK's question - why fit them:

I need the RR to get me to the stables regardless of the weather. The last 2 winters have seen the farm road in snow/ice for weeks at a time - I need to get there.
I am expected to get to my work as well, pretty much regardless of the weather. Likewise, snow / ice for weeks at a time on some parts of the commute journey.
I often drive farm tracks and over messy ground which seems to have punctured numerous road bias tyres that I have fitted. I found 2 shards of metal / horse shoe nail shoved into a rear tyre when taking the old tyres off today - no idea how long they had been in the tyre.
My old tyres were wearing down and needed replacing on the fronts anyway... I was caught out badly hitting deep standing water last night on the way home in a spot that doesn't normally puddle up. I regularly drive in the dark hours in poor conditions and want the care to be sure footed.

The LTZ's 275/55R20 are the chunkiest tyre tread I can fit on the RR without having to mod it, or buy different alloys ( the 285/50 ratio is too wide on original stock wheels to clear the strut and 275/45 is a low sidewall ratio and is smaller than stock )
The big chunky tread should serve me well for some more protection against the punctures I get and be more suited to my winter needs and general driving.
Its my personal experience that large block chunky treads handle standing water ( not necessarily wet road - I mean deep puddles ) better.
They were £100 each ... no other chunky tread pattern comes remotely close to that price.

That answer why I want them?

Plus, they look good! Laughing V8 or else ...

They will be better after a 1000 miles once the square edges have rounded slightly. Mine went quieter and felt better. Check your speed with a tom tom so you know the difference for speed cameras. I Really like mine and get loads of comments about having 'proper tyres' on a 4x4.
