Sky Broadband V others

At the moment i have Sky broadband but due to the size of the house there are blindspots that the signal does not reach.

Spoke with Sky techie's asked them if i could buy an aftermarket router (PC WORLD) and use that , but in return Sky told me i can only use their own standard issue router due to technical verbal diarrhoea stuff ..

Does anyone techie minded on here know different , as i was thinking of buying a Linksy router ..

Of course you can - just buy one and set it up with the same settings as the Sky one.

You could even use an old laptop or Pc with wireless /wireless adapters to setup an ad-hoc network and then bridge this to the main router! Techie enough?

If you get another router check that it can operate as an access point - most new ones should, but just check. .

No Scarey the smaller one is one of the holiday homes Wink Razz

As said above or get range extenders. with your moola Mick i'd just get a cat5 cable run round the house and stick another access point with the same details on it setup to cover the place Smile

As the others say, get a wireless box to extend the wireless network. I use an Apple Airport Extreme to extend my wireless network (BT main socket is under the stairs) to the two top floors. The coverage it provides (it uses both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies) and performance are rock solid. Extending your existing wireless network is a piece of Censored .

Linksys routers are pretty decent boxes. They are owned by Cisco. I haven't had a Linksys box for a while but it wasn't the most straight forward thing to configure for non-techies. I would imagine they have come on over the years though. Paul

Problem only restarted Stan as i had two landlines coming into the house one with BT broadband for downstairs and Sky broadband for upstairs , so got shot of the BT one as i wasn't using it to it's proper use .. i.e. telephone calls and such full rental etc etc …

Kept the Sky one as that is tied up with the Sky+ box and two Sky digi boxes , Sky talk , and all that other crap that you get with Sky …

Censored up big time since doing away with BT ….

@Kingpleb looked into running Cat5 cable , but not really feasible as to where router is and where i would need to run it to plus having to chase it up through the back of walls ... Thumbs Up

But some of the suggestions you guys have made , i will look into them … Bow down Thumbs Up ====================================

I had the same problem Mick.. I went to maplin and bought a planet 150mbps 802.11n wireless range extender. Easy to set up. It basically doubles the reach of your router. £19.99 well spent. You can even plug non wireless devices into it with a patch lead. Previously..

Another vote for the Apple airport. Very easy to configure and lots of options. In the end I left the original wireless router, which didn't have much range, as a guest network and set up another wireless network only on apple gear (a Time Machine and Airport). Whereas the original router struggled to get signal except in one room or the room above, the apple kit seems to have better range.

Apple time capsule (airport and back up device in one box) is great for me, keep my whole house connected.

Used these

In my parents house to get the signal moved around as it is a very large Victorian semi. Added another wireless router at the other end to give 2 wireless networks but 100% coverage. My dad seems to think that he gets a very good speed on this and it is also plugged into the back of his Sony tv to run the BBC iplayer etc over an Ethernet cable with no issues streaming the higher quality feed. Thumbs Up
