Gutted

Well I have had my 05 model Range Rover just over a week and I have been really pleased with the way it performs. Well I have been working through my To Do list oil and filter, lpg service etc, today its been gearbox oil and filter(car as only done 72,000)so up on the ramp it goes and 20 mins later the manager brings me the bad news, my torque converter is going Big Cry the oil in the pan was 'as black as old engine oil', but on the plus side he said because its been caught early and they can recon my old torque converter flush out the gearbox check it over and I should get it back on Friday Thumbs Up
Phil
PS the car drove perfectly so I thought it would just be a routine oil and filter change for £150 but now its a little bit more approx £1000 Shocked

Are you sure you're not being taken for a ride Phil? There are Wiki's here that show the old oil from the gearbox as being black as night and describe the transfer box oil as dark blackish grey, without necessarily meaning that there's anything wrong with them.

Some of these stories make me think that if a box is working OK then leave well alone.....

I have just had a look at the wiki for the gearbox oil and yes I agree that looks black but I really dont know if mine is any worse or any better than the one pictured, but I did see all the nice shiny bits in the bottom of the pan on mine. I am hoping the gearbox specialist is being honest and not having my pants down.

Phil
dont let them do anything. My oil was black as hell and smelt a bit burnt. the black is the friction material from the clutch plates. The important thing is what the magnets are like in the sump pan. there are 4 one in each corner, if there covered in metal bits you have impending doom and a bust wallet. Mine had what were like filings from wear and when RRPhil looked at my photos he said that was normal and nothing to worry about. Sounds like your being taken for a ride. You have the ZF box which is very good and not that prone to failure, unlike the GM in the TD6 which is very weak. PM RRPhil hes a great guy and more than happy to help. renowned to be a gearbox guru! [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

I have a 2005 TD6 therefore the GM box.

I have just had my TC changed due to a vibration where the LUC wasn't engaging properly at the correct time.

The TC is a sealed unit, therefore I can't understand how they know it's gone without testing it for failing symptoms.

Did you suffer any vibrations around 30 to 40mph?

As already said, give RRPhil a shout.

I would say if it is running fine then just a filter and ATF fluid change and 'let it develop' Thumbs Up

you said it yourself, I'd just get it refilled with oil and drive it until something does go wrong, there are a lot of so called specialists out there dreaming up issues to create work! its a harsh economic climate at the moment...

Well I got my car back today after the TC was diagnosed as being faulty, it has had
1 converter
2 overhaul kit
3 c'clutch input bearing
4 c'clutch piston
5 c'clutch friction kit
6 filter
7 transmission fluid
8 labour (ouch)
now for the verdict.
I drove tha car home approx 27miles and it felt really taut and smooth, I could not believe it was possible to be that smooth but there you go it was, anyway I decided to go for a drive tonight to give it a bit of a test. Then I negotiated a roudabout and heard a funny noise like I had run over something, I proceeded up the dual carriageway without any dramas until I reached a friends house. We then went out so he could drive the car and I heard another noise like running over rumble strips but once up to 50mph this noise disappeard. So is this the TC bedding in? or as I supect something is a miss.
All the best
Phil

oh man i feel for yer....get it back asap.

too late for you now.... Crying or Very sad but i do feel these boxes should be left alone, i'm sure the new oil breaks down crap that was once safe and stuck out the way, but that's just my opinion from reading forums because mechanically i have not got a clue how they work.... 2004 black Vogue TD6
