Hello, did anyone change the oil for the Td6 GM5L40 gearbox? Is there a filter in too? The manual only explains how to change the oil but doesn’t mention a filter...

The GM5L40 is also known as the BMW A5S360R, as long as that write-up on the BMW forum is for the 360 or 390 (the slightly upgraded version - aka the GM5L50) then it should be a good starting point.

Bear in mind that the RR uses a 4x4 version of the GM5L40, so capacities etc might be slightly different.

OK, two problems, The filter is over 200EUR, and there is no Texaco ETL 7045E oil in my country! Is there an equivalent from a different brand?
The reason I'm looking into the gearbox oil change is a series of shudders while reversing, I presume it's a bad sign...

OK, so if we're talking about a different gearbox on the BMW site, can anyone give me the code for the GM 5L40 filter? I presumed it was the BMW THE 00030 part, is this correct? There is no mention of the filter in Microcat...

THE00030 is a Land Rover part number (or would be, but it's missing a number - should be 6 numbers).

The BMW part number for the A5S360R filter kit is 24117557070 - see http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?mo...&fg=15

The Bimmerfest link does in fact show a GM gearbox, not sure if it's the GM5L40 (aka A5S360R) or the A5S390R they are showing... but they are very similar, and use the same service parts.

It might be worth getting in touch with the parts department at site sponsor Charles Hurst, or Nick Lee at Yeovil Land Rover (sponsor on DISCO3 and sends parts out all over the world), to see if they can source the filter and oil for you and send to you - might work out cheaper!

Try a Google search for "Texaco ETL 7045E alternative", however it is recommended not to mix the special Texaco fluid with any alternative, which you would be doing for a simple filter change unless you went for a complete fluid flush. For this reason I would personally try and source the correct fluid from elsewhere if possible before trying to find an alternative.

I did a lot of research into LR/BMW gearboxes recently as I was asked to change the fluid in a 1999 535i box, and went through all these options for fluids and sourcing parts etc etc!

Also, I would check the LR spec for the gearbox oil, they may have an alternative requirement to BMW and so use a different fluid...

The filter part name is THE000030, my mistake, sorry.

In RAVE they say: GM Automatic Gearbox oil: Use only Texaco ETL-7045E.

I will try to contact the companies you mentioned if after tomorrow I cannot source filter/oil locally.

It is amazing that nobody DIY’d the GM5L40-E oil flush...

OK, I found the filter/gasket kit for 40EUR and the oil at BMW (Texaco ETL 7045E, BMW p/n 83 22 0 026 922) for 11EUR/liter. Will try the procedure in a day or two and I will post pictures and results. I spoke to the BMW engine/gearbox specialist and his opinion is (although he’s against touching a gearbox if there is no sign of malfunction) that the GM gearboxes have filters that clog easier. Therefore a filter and oil change are recommended after 60-80000km...
