Interesting to see BMW jumping on the bandwagon and recommending customers buy a new set of wheels with Winter Tyres.....

Back to Gary's original post:

What a lovely sales gimmick it is too, getting punters to run down to the dealer in a sweat of fear to buy a set of tyres they probably don't need. Having said that, in a BMW you need all the help you can get, they are truly rubbish in the slush/ice/snow.

Strange how Land Rover aren't telling us all we need to do this (as far as I can tell)

I was in at Stratsones last week and they have a pile of Winter tyres (Tyfoon I think???) Apparently they are really cheap Asian tyres which they are happily fitting to all Land Rover models... kind of shocked me when you consider that Land Rover always recommend/insist on top brands for their vehicles??? Shocked

I'd say this is all down to individual circumstance.
If you life somewhere that is heavily effected by wintery weather you're more likely to buy a winter set compared to someone that lives in an area that rarely sees snow/ice.
Plus money is a factor, some can easily afford to buy 2 sets, others may have other priorities. For example I had a second set of wheels that had 2 good tyres but needed 2 changing. So my choices were spend 200-300 quid on completing my winter set or selling the wheels for £300. I choose the later and am now £600 better off than I would have been if I'd choosen the first option. That money will help with the christmas pressie as well as the after market sat nav I just bought Thumbs Up FFRR TD6 HSE
Adriatic Blue with Parchment leather.

I had planned buying winter tyres for my 18" wheels this year, but in all honesty the FFRR never put a foot wrong last year when the temperature dropped to -17c and with over 15" of snow, so the 18s are now in the basement Thumbs Up

Tyres wear out, so having two sets means, yes they cost twice the price, but they last twice as long. Obviously the cost of the wheels is a factor but second hand wheels seem to hold their value well. i only jumped on this bandwagon because I am going to pick up a set of wheels in the morning. Yep, last time I swapped my wheels it bent the jack beyond repair and almost broke my back.

Those 20's are heavy to lift! Changing 1 is bad enough, doing 4 is not fun. Discovery 4 HSE

Well, I'll be able to let you all know how the FF does on Winter tyres.

I ran a set of Wintracs on 2nd hand rims on the D3 last year, and was sufficiently impressed to buy a further set for the FFRR this year. I'll be swapping them over in a week or so (or rather, my local tyre shop will be...)

There's a huge amount of debate on thsi topic on disco3.co.uk... Graham
