can suspension compressor be stripped/repaired?

Started getting a regular "air susp inactive" on the dash and it reads as pressure static when filling so i am guessing my compressor is getting tired. I regularly rebuild P38 compressors with a piston/seal kit off ebay and wondered if anything was available to overhaul the pump on the FFRR? or do i have to shell out for a complete unit and throw the shell away(mine has the gas tank where the compressor turtle should be and the compressor is mounted t the side

There is nothing out there yet Paul. Looked into it quite a bit. I'm working on this with another member but not had anything good to report yet. bought a compressor from ebay for a tenner and it works, but i thought i would strip it to see what can be done, i contacted wabco and they will not give any info what so ever, there are no rebuild kits, i was looking for a data sheet to see what it is ment to do, it appears that it has a pressure cut of so when it gets to its pressure it stops.
would be nice to get a thread together on a rebuild.

@Daveo the compressor also has a thermal cut off. I was looking into plumbing a second compressor into the system using a simple relay system to cut the power when the main compressor s/d, it should be quite simple in theory but haven't got round to doing it yet. The compressor is capable of pumping 14bar I think. Found some technical drawing on the Wabco website but there were no details about piston ring dimensions. Swast (Adam) has my old compressor stripped and has a guy we work with making up a few piston rings which might work, as that's the part which fails. The elec motors are pretty robust it's the piston rings that fail/ ware resulting in slow and poor performance. [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

i had a chat with tech at webco,try to find out what other compressors shares the same parts, they do repair kits for other compressors in there range but it seems like land rover holds all the cards on this one, they would not even tell me what bar it should push..so i have started looking for some diagrammes on line. V8 facelift Range Rover Autobiography 22" wheels.

Hi All

Theres another thread running with pretty much the same content... I am waiting for a reply from Goswin at Landrovermall in the Netherlands, but dont hold your breath..... (they make the repair kit for the P38). I asked him if they had plans to offer a similiar kit for the L322. The age/wear rate of this component must make a repair kit a viable opportunity? Maybe its still under license, to LR or Wabco? I dont know anybody that could copy the piston ring, but it looks pretty straightforward once you know the material spec. I am taking mine apart tomorrow, clean everything, apply some silicone lube sparingly and see what happens.

I had a reply to my email to Landrovermall's Goswin de Rouwe He is looking at this but has nothing to offer at the moment. I never got round to stripping mine down, the weather was nice and I found better stuff to do!

Will do it one night this week, and will post a quick description of the process/results. Funny, its behaving perfect at the moment, in the past it has thrown the 'static pressure' fault code within miles of being reset.

Not necessarily.

Mine used to fault with this error from time to time, yet it still managed to keep the car at normal height for 1000's of miles. The problem was actually the pressure sensor itself on the tank. It wasn't registering an increase in pressure when the system started up and did a pressure test.

The pump itself was fine and managed to pump the air bags directly. Just the sensor duff. V8 or else ...

Hi Fisha,

Where is this sensor ? is it actually in the compressor unit. mines is taking over 1 minute to actually get into off road height which makes me think that the compressor is on its way out. the only time my suspension started causing issues was when my tyre well was filled up with water due to the tailgate being left open by my brother so im not suspecting anything at all

From what I know the compressor fills the air tank and the tank distributes the air to whatever corner requires it. If the compressor is weak it will be slow filling the tank and therefore throw up faults
