hi I posted earlier last week a thread about my new LR 4.4 vogue 2004, LPG. it had an issue with the gearbox sticking in 3rd gear and the engine managememnt light on. These came on the day I drove the car back from the dealer about 2 weeks ago.

Its been in to a LR specialist but they cannot find any fault codes or issues with gearbox other than a low bat at some point. the mechanic said could be anything but its not overheating of gbox as first thought as there are no fault codes or signs of it. He did say the ATF was a bit 'smelly' but not sure what to make of that.

His opinion was could be debris in box causing gears to stick which is obv sign of imminent failure or something as small as bat voltage low. He is not sure as no signs of anything else. His advice was to flush box and see but that will no doubt invalidate the 3 month warrenty from Ev Hal so if it does go it'll be my fault. So I'm kinda Fkd if i do fkd if I dont!

I let Evans Halshaw know and I offered to take it to LR themselves to diagnose or alternatively I want my money back. They have emailed back and just said bring car back and they will return full purchase price!

What shall I do? their stance is, if its going to cost more than the profit in it they want to send it to auction as they will get max price now (just before winter) with no risks of me whinging at them and they will get what they paid for it so no loss. Either that or they have another buyer??

Its a spotless car other than a few niggles and doubt i'll find a better one! £13k I paid, LPG, 04 65K FSH.

Also quick note the EH I dealt with are top bunch not like the other EH u read about on internet and I would buy from there again. Thought I was going to end up in a massive slog over next month trying to sort this out but its no quibble return so my praises to them.

If you are not happy I would return it and get my money back. Otherwise you may face potentially large bill in the not too distant future and may regret not returning the car . Alternately you could ask them to source a suitable replacement for you. Theres always Gaz Site Sponsor on here that may be able to source one within your price range should you get your money back .

Take the money and find another

Take the Refund, then you could always look for one with a new or reconditioned box fitted recently.... Will take some of the risk away from owning a FFRR, it seems to be one of the most expensive/common failures....

Get your money back. They suffer with enough problems without starting your ownership with one. It could randomly start working fine and you would be happy then 3months down the line bite you in the ass for a new gearbox etc. you can find plenty out there and get the conversion done yourself. Just my 2p worth. I know your head will say get your dosh back but your heart will say keep it! Unanimous decision is to give it back then! Think I will take that offer up. rang manager but he's in a meeting.

There are plenty out there at £10-12K and a LPG at £1500 would bring it in at less than this one I guess. Lovely car, if they replaced the box then I'd have an easier decision but sounds like they dont want the hassle and just want to get rid. They just look at figures dont they so maths dictates to take it back.

Shame as its a lovely car and could be something minor, but one of the reasons I bought from a main dealer (and paid at least £1500 more) was for this very peace of mind so no point putting up with it. Guess I'll put it down to bad experience and learn from it. I'll get back on AT looking for a new one!

Glad I bought from a main dealer now think I'll see if they have something similar.

As you said you have already had your £1500 worth by getting away with a potential lemon. It could be something minor and an easy fix costing less than a few £££'s but being a FFRR it could very well make you bankrupt. Keep an eye out as there are plenty there. A few minor cosmetic problems isnt an issue but gearbox and ECU problems for me makes it a no brainer. [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

They will just take the car back and ship it off to auction as they couldnt take the hit on getting a proper warranty as they arent cheap at dealer level and then they still have the agro of sorting the box out and anything else it kills like the TC as well.

I'll bet it was a PX as well anyway.

Does seem like a good price, speak with them regarding sharing the cost of a new g/box because 13.5k sounds really good for an 04 LPG with 65k on and a brand new g/box

You could always keep it and take out a years warranty on it then hope the gearbox fails.

It was a part ex from their merc garage in scotland, they cherry pick the good ones and rest just go to auction.

£13k is about right I would say but I factored in the cost of LPG at £2K worst case so asked myself would I get a 65K minter for £11k from dealer with cream leather tints and as new 22" stormers...answer was a firm no so thats why I went for it.

Suppose if they replace the box at £2k even going halves would bring it upto £14K which is arguably reasonable. But then it becomes a bit pricey and not far off a facelift diesel on an 06... its all relative suppose but dont see why I should cough up anything for a problem which was there from literally the day I bought it. within 1 hour in fact! Strange how its not happened since though...albeit not driven it much for fear of killing it!

Going to give it back I think. If its picked up at an auction for £9-10K and someone can fix the box for a few quid they have a healthy 2-3K profit in it though

I'd watch and see if it goes to auction and if it does buy it cheaper and the money you save can go on a proper warranty that will take care of the gearbox

Or just ask them to knock £1k off it and the warranty is taken care of then

Look up RRPhil on here. He is a gearbox guru! He even offers to overhaul your box if you can get it to him. He's in Preston. Where are you? He can also help diagnose the box fault with a bit of info from you. If the dealer will meet the cost of removing the box etc it might be an option if you really want to keep the car. PM Phil and see what he says. The ZF box in the 4.4 is a very good box and I would be surprised if its terminal after 65k miles.
