Personally I think bypassing your insurance company isn't advisable. You pay them to protect you against this kind of crap, so not using them seems like a waste.
However, if you insist on avoiding insurance then you want him to to take his car to a repair agent that *you* want to use, as you are the one paying for the work. Get them to identify any damage and give *you* a quote. Then it's up to him if he wants to accept your offer of having it repaired. If he doesn't then ask for his insurance details and call your insurance company.
