car wont turn over!

Hi, my car now has a new problem! When I get in to start the car it does not even crank the engine. I can hear the fuel pumps doing their bits and the battery seems strong enough no fading light or fault codes. When I turn the key all I can hear is there is light whirring noise from under the gear lever. Is there a motor there that connect to the starter? Or is my key not recognised by the immobiliser? I starting to regret buying the thing as all I have been doing the last month that I've had it is visiting garages! And I got rust on the rear arches which I did not notice when checking over the car. I woul have presumed for such a prestigr car that would not be problem. It is a 2005/55 facelift Td6 vogue 60k, remapped. Big Cry

Yep, I would start at the battery.

Get a volt reading off the battery and see what state it's in.

Good luck.

Hi guys it's happened again, so I called RAC. Guess what happens as soon as he arrives the thing fires up. Then we tried about 20 times and only 2/3 times it did not turn over. So it should not be the battery but a faulty part - lock barrel? Solenoid? Banging Head

The battery is less than a year old. Its been starting fine for the last day, even though I was doing stop/start journeys.

Poor earth to the starter, knackered starter, broken wire, inhibitor switch on gearbox, blown fuse, there are so many things that could cause this problem and only by working through some of the more common faults will you be able to eventually find the cause

My money would be on a battery too, mine used to do it if the car had been standing for a week or so. 2006 Mercedes CLS

Mine does this occasionally, even though she starts fine after removing and re-inserting the key.
