Have had S-Class Mercs for over 10 years now and have driven many miles in them, they are great cars but the Audi A8 beats it in everything except the three point star.

Jaguar I wouldn't even consider

I love the A8. Needs the 4.2 diesel lump of course. Very fine in every way, without the flash of the 3-pointed star. Audi dealers are another matter... Neutral Graham

Never driven the S class, but driven a couple of XJ's and A8's. (not LWB though...)

The XJ is great if you like driving a boat...Great for wafting along, but not much fun. A8 all the way for me. Antoniasdad hit the nail on the head with engine choice - 4.2 diesel is just fantastic!

I am being swayed towards the Audi A8 but wouldn't want a 4.2.. I'm not looking for speed. I just want a comfortable car with a few luxuries and decent MPG Thumbs Up

In my experience teh 3 litre is certainly adequate, but I always felt it was overwhelemed by the weight of the car and the demands of the quattro system. You could look out for a 2WD version, usefully cheaper too. Graham

The MPG is only around 3MPG different between the 4.2 and the 3.0 litre.
May have a further look into it.
Would probably want 4 wheel drive for the snow.

I had a 3.0tdi quattro

It was not a ferrari but certainly had enough power. I test drove the 4.2, yes a different beast, more difficult to find and I wouldn't waste my money on the extra power.

So does the 3.0 still pull well?

I have no doubt that the Audi is technically good, it just leaves me cold. To me it's a car devoid of character! Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

...and the engine is in the wrong place.

Heart says Jag, head says Merc. I normally buy things with my heart - hence the FFRR.
