Help Needed...Multiple Warning Lights

Hi,

I have a 2003 4.4 Vogue with some issues -

Every time i drive it, after a random amount of time i get the following warnings: HDC Error / ABS Light / Air Suspension inactive.

I have had the ECU read by an indy who diagnosed a faulty ABS sensor. This was replaced yet the fault remains and the ECU continues to show an open circuit on the ABS sensor.

The garage has now informed me they will need to replace the ECU Control Unit at a substantial cost.

Is it correct to assume that the ECU needs replacing? I have heard that the ECU often puts up messages such as "internal failure" etc to signify an actual computer fault.

Possibly related - after approx an hour of driving in town, the car seems to get stuck in gear, and only changes if redlined? The manual functions also fail when this problem arises.

Am i being taken for a ride here?

Thanks in advance for the help!

I'd second that and change your battery or at the very least get it properly tested.......it's a lot cheaper. 5.0 supercharged autobiography

I suspect the gearbox will turn out to be unrelated, I would get your gearbox oil changed immediately if I was you! Hope it is a battery issue with the warning lights! Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

Thanks for the replies!

Very interesting that everyone says battery, anyone got an idea what the specs should be for a replacement?

Would rather not trust the advice of a 17 year old Halfords employee!

Thanks

It doesn't sound right that you need a new ABS ECU, I don't see why it should fail.

I am having similar problems with the same fault lights, HDC, ABS & air suspension inactive coming on after driving for 15mins on motorway (check my previous posts). I'm sure a proper Testbook from an Indy would tell you which ABS sensor was showing open circuit and could be worth swapping left and right to prove if it is still faulty by means of allimintion.

Have you taken it to a Range Rover specialist with testbook to diagnose or just a garrage with general diagnostics. It may seem more money to plug it in but sometimes its money well spent rather than getting half the info, plus you should have there experiance.

Hi, yes it is a specialist with proper RR diagnostic equipment and it seemed to pinpoint a specific sensor on a specific wheel, which was then replaced.

When the lights came on again they claimed they could then not reset the lights, whereas previously they were able to.

Another thing I have noticed is that when these lights are on the sat nav stops working?! By that I mean the map freezes your position wherever you were when the lights came on?!

Oh right, I never needed my lights reseting because every time the ignition was switched off it reset it's self again, until the next time I was doing a motorway drive.
Seems strange about the Sat Nav freezing as well, just out of interest next time I drive the RR I will put the sat Nav on and see if it does the same.
I also found out that these cars use a system called CAN BUS for the wiring, which basically means more than one piece of equipment can use the same wires to transmit a signal (there is a much better explanation on here somewhere if you search) and if there is a fault on the part of the wiring it will throw a fault on all equipment sharing those wires. (This is what I have interprited about the set up anyway)

It still seems strange that they found a specific fault with an ABS sensor, replaced it and it now shows an open circuit with that the same sensor and that they can't reset. An open circuit could indicate faulty wiring ?

STILL GOT LIGHTS ON?!?!

I want to drive the car off a cliff!

Anyone had an issue like this?

Could be numerous things causing the light to show as the Air Suspension, HDC, Steering Angle Sensor, Speed Sensor and possibly a few more sensors are all interlinked. You need to find an electrician who knows what he's doing

What was the outcome of the battery test? Just because it passes a basic test, doesn't mean it's not the cause of your problems! Could be a red herring, but still something worth considering, how old is the battery? Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!
