Supershuutle, why don't you take the pin out, put a chain around a gate post and around the ball and pull very slowly in low box. It should come out as there is nothing else other than a bit of corrosion stopping it.

Wales 2003 Range Rover SE Td6 Zambezi Silver

I had a similar problem with my tow bar rusted in place. I eventually managed to remove it by judicious use of a copper faced lump hammer and a lot of sweat. I sanded it all down and now it just slips into place in a matter of seconds whenever needed. When not fitted the square hole is filled with a plastic bung which gives a neat and tidy appearance. No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

I've been battering mine regularly with a proper lump hammer and applying copious amounts of WD40 when parked somewhere other than on my drive (drips everywhere).

Still no movement, I'll get round to applying heat and uprooting trees in due course Very Happy Geoff

has somebody bashed some shims or washers in the gap around the socket to stop the rattle - it has been done before. I usually push a business card into the gap to stop the rattle, but some people have hammered washers in there.

I take it the bolt on yours is not threaded and just passes straight through? The bolt on mine is threaded, likewise the hole in the 'Farmers Towbar' then there's the nut then the 'R'clip, it's all supposed to be torqued up to some incredible amount of Nm. Still comes off quite quick, there's no rattling either.

no, no nuts and no threaded bits, this was an upgrade option by LR to cure the annoying rattle - especially with a close coupled twin axle trailer.

Mine I just pull the "R" clip and pull out the pin and she is off. Exactly the same as a tractor clevis pin, 5 seconds and its out. The pin and R clip can be seen in page 1 second pic of this thread.

Mine had a pin, but it was seized solid and had to be cut out, now I use a bolt and nut and tighten it up to some incredible amount of Nm.......Sorted Thumbs Up

I would be carefull using heat. Make sure to protect the surrounding areas.

I had been hammering mine every now and then with lump hammers. Maybe I was being a bit to careful though as I didnt want to do any damage. One day my mate gave it a go, he spent a good few minutes really hitting it with a good heavy hammer. Eventually it started to work loose. You will be surprised how solid and heavy it actually is, so it really needs a lot of weight in the blows to shift it. When I got it out I wire brushed it all over and filed the corners a little. Now it just slides in easily when I need it. The car looks a lot neater too.

By the way, I doubt it will actually pull out by attaching to a solid object. I used some 3 ton force spreaders to try to push it out - not a chance. You need a hammering type action to vibrate the bar free. No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE
