Ruin your street cred and buy a last generation Honda Jazz, the 1.4 with the Vtec engine and the CVT gearbox and scare the living daylights out of all the granddads that normally buy them then drive them at 35mph everywhere. It'll be hard to find one that hasn't been well looked after too! 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper S E All4 PHEV in Melting Silver - it’s whisper quiet in EV and polluter modes

The car in front is a Honda, the car behind is a Honda, the car to the left is a Honda, the car to the right is a Honda, the car above is a Honda and the car below your ass is a FFRR - WIN! Thumbs Up Geoff

I thought Honda's were used to even out the potholes for FFRR Wink

TBH though in all seriousness if you get a megane the 1.5dci isnt going to be as economical as the 1.9dci as you'll find with anything bigger than say a polo/ibiza these days if the engine is less than say about 1800cc the low down grunt you need to make a diesel economical(talking offboost here as well) is just not going to be there. Speaking from experience here as i have driven plenty of turd piles rented for work and some true beauties, everything from the 1.2 corsa brigade right through to a nice fresh D4 HSE SDV6 Very Happy

Scotland 2017 Range Rover Autobiography SDV8 Loire Blue

My wife drives a nearly 10 year old Honda Jazz she's had from brand new. Had VERY few problems with it, and only due to wear and tear commensurate with its age. Cracking wee car, but I doubt a budget of £1000-£1500 wouldn't get anywhere near one IMHO.
I can also vouch for the Focus. I had one for a couple of years and apart from some front suspension components needing replaced, it was smooth (and cheap) running. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
Had- 2008 TDV8 Vogue SE in Java black
Had - 2007 S/C in Stornoway Grey

Just adding into the Focus argument, my wife has had one for 10 or so years from new (X reg) its done 57k and pretty much never missed a beat.
Unfortunately its a 2L petrol so I don't think its much more econ than my 3.6 - but reliable yes.She wants a new car and I have agreed but she can't find anything that she likes thats better so until she does she might as well keep it Whistle Geoff

Wales 2003 Range Rover SE Td6 Zambezi Silver

I have the old shape megane as my stand-by car. It's a 2.0 Sport Alize Coupe. Had it 9 years mow. I generally drive it with a very heavy foot and over the last 1800 miles (since last service) it averages 40.8 mpg. Not too bad for an old petrol 'sporty' engine that gets ragged lol. The suspension is rock hard so I really appreciate the comfort of my FF on a long journey. No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE
