TBh it depends what you want from one.

What about a Rav4? Bit more economical due to its 4x4 use as most of the time the drive is sent only to the front wheels.

Or how about an older pathfinder or is it the size putting her off and she wants a smaller one??

Suzuki do some good ones and they are rated for reliability and running costs long run and seem to be able to handle most offroad stuff you could expect of such vehicles..

My wife has had two Shogun Pinins.
Kept both for quite a few years. Great cars, well made only two problems.
Due to the permanent un-controlled egr system on the petrol models the throttle body tends to get a build up of exhaust products which results in un-even engine idle and poor running. You can either have the throttle bodies cleaned with walnut shell blasting or simply replace them. They all do it, common problem
I replaced both on my wifes cars with re-manufactured units from BBA Reman £300.00.
The problem occurs about 70-80k generally.
The other problem is the brake pipes corrode at the back end. Shame really, only corrosion on the cars, they are well protected.
My wife drove both summer and winter including serious snow and ice without any problems. I also drove them regularly, nice car to drive.
Parts are a bit expensive but apart from service items and the egr problem nothing ever needed.
