Hi All,

I'm thinking of buying a trailer to carry our camping gear, which should protect the interior from getting scuffed as we attempt to wedge in ever more unnecessary camping bits. Rather than buying an Erde tin box thing, I'm toying with the idea of restoring a ex-military Sankey trailer to tow behind the FFRR.


Is it possible to fit a nato hitch coupling to a the genuine LR multiple height tow bar bracket?



If so, does anyone know if the tow bar height will be suitable for a Sankey?

yes it will fit on the tow bar you show. You may need heavy duty washers or a backing plate as the bolts are smaller than the holes on the draw bar. The trailer will tow ok, but it will be nose down on the std RR draw bar.

Your lights will not be plug and play, the sankey is configured for military vehicles, you have two options either the trailer will need to be re-wired to the std uk trailer wiring plug, or use a trailer lighting board.

The sankey is better than any shiite trailer from halfrauds! but they are heavy...

the other good thing is they take std Land Rover wheels, i.e. LR Series, Defender and I have also even seen RR Classic and Discovery alloys fitted.

The problem with the Nato hitch is that it will allow the trailer to rattle about on the hitch. Best convert to a standard hitch if possible for a more comfortable drive.

Mine dosent rattle about

Just use plenty of grease but they rattle about as they are designed to be really used under the most extreme conditions we have around the globe

They are worth the outlay if your planning on keeping it for a good few years and the nose down issue is easy enough to resolve

As said mr Wiggs is the man for info on converting if the lighting board option is too Heath Robinson for you

If you buy the type shown in your first photo you can turn the tow coupling tube upside down and bolt it underneath the trailer A frame instead of on top. It will then ride level with your standard height tow bar.Theres a bit of work modifying the brake linkage but ive seen it done before.

isnt this trailer going to slow you down a bit justin....
dont know what it is but there is a speed limit for cars towing trailers, maybe someone will inform us here..

is it also only the first two lanes on the motorway..

Towing regs should be waived for FFRR's. Towing a small 6x4 trailer at 60mph - WTF is that about. 

That is the speed limit on the kings highway, off piste its what ever you want

tbh when you see these trailers being pulled at 70/75 mph and they start bouncing side to side ,then that's probably why there's a speed limit for them...

On the drive to the south if France, we saw many trailers being towed at 80mpg, and they all looked stable.

However I'm not sure how a heavy Sankey would cope at that speed.
