Dirty hands - not for me Very Happy

But neither main dealer prices so I still need to find a good indy near Chorley (Lancashire) but will be March next year unless anything goes wrong in the meantime.

I will probably get them to change everything that's changeable, oil, filters etc do an MOT and see them once a year to repeat the process. Oh and I might pay extra to get that Censored armature towbar out of the reciever, I'm fed up of applying WD40 everytime its parked somewhere other than my drive (drips) and a bottle jack and big 'ammer to no avail every weekend. Geoff

Have you tried putting some heat on it? That usually frees up most seized bits.

Why not put a big heavy unit on the back of it while suspension in access mode, then just lift up the jockey wheel a tiny bit, unlock the joint, then raise the suspension to normal heightand tap it with the hammer being careful to avoid backlash... should come out a treat as long as the nose weight isn't massively high but not far off the limit...

I had to remove my towbar completely and take it to my MOT man where they used a oxy acetylene and a 200lb press to remove the armature

How long had it been stuck in place - I reckon this one has been on for 4 years or more the bag and the rubber bung, fortunately still in the boot, look brand new. That's why I was going to ask the indy to remove it on the first service. Geoff

My guess is that mine was fitted to the vehicle when new and never removed. The locking pin was seized solid and had to be removed in bits, then I spent months spraying loads of releasing fluids and forcing it with a jack at the back of the plate to no avail. The mechanic who did eventually part it could not believe it was such a stubborn item to split

I have tried the same things you have, only difference is that the locking pin comes out easily in fact I might as well leave it out as the other two bits are so stuck Confused Geoff

If it's not as big as the one in Mick's picture then get down to B&Q and get one of those little plumbing blow lamps. They may look weedy but 5 minutes of heat with one of them and a hefty whack with a hammer and it should come out.

I doubt if a plumbers gas torch from B&Q will work, there is not enough heat from it to sufficiently heat the surrounding metal.


The temperatures below are a rough indication of what each type of gas torch output is.

Butane..............1430°C = 2600°F

Propane.............1995°C = 3623°F

Mapp Gas..........3160°C = 5720°F (this is what I use)

Oxyacetylene.....3316°C = 6000°F
