2015 Range Rover Vogue SE SDV8 Barolo Black
De-cat Downpipe?

While i'm waiting for my EGR blanking kit to arrive, seen lots of Disco and Defender types have also put on a cat free downpipe because 'its not needed on diesels'

Anybody done this and got through a MOT?

Saw a straight through TD6 downpipe on ebay for £99 thinking it might be worth a shot if another comes up? __________________

IIRC isn't some fuel injected into these to clean them out every now and again and this function would also need turning off? this might only be for the V6 and V8 units mind....

Would be nice as i want to gain some extra pull out of the engine without pushing parts too hard Smile

I've de-catted several diesel engines and never had a problem when it came to MOT time.

the fuel burning thing is a Particule filter, these can be a pain in the rear too especially if you do alot of short stop start journeys it can ruin things and leave you with a bill for a new one. i don't think the FF has one of these though. Current: TDV8 (3.6) RRS HSE

Although it is technically a good idea to remove the cat on a diesel and you will see an improvement in performance you may wish to wait awhile until the new requirements for mot's for 2012 are published.
One item I remember seeing in the draft proposals was to check if the catalytic convertor was in place. If not and your car is listed as having one at manufacture I'm afraid it's a fail.
I presume this is to catch all the owners who remove them.

IIRC isnt that only going to affect vehicles made after that date though as some vehicles back then still didn't have cat's on them?? (diesels of course)

I was warned about this recently as my Defender was fitted with the optional cat when it was ordered with one by the previous owner. I had it removed when I too needed a new front end of the exhaust system. Ive done this with my td6 2 years ago. getting more mpg. Passed last 2 mots no problem. My cat was rattling when revs just above tickover so i removed it and cut it open. Removed the guts and welded it back together.[url]

How much real mpg difference did it make?

Did it increase spool up for the turbo or low down toqrue at all??

The paper I read indicated that cars would be inspected to check for the cat being in place if the car was manufactured with one. There was no cut off point regarding back dating the requirement.
I think the number of mot failures may from 2012 be about to increase along with the sale of replacement cats. Smile
If the car wasn't origonally fitted with a cat at manufacture, no problem.
The idea of cutting the cat open, removing the insides and re-welding is probably the way to go, probably couldn't be checked on a diesel. Whistle

Is it just a change to indicate if one is still fitted, or if fitted and functioning?

If functioning how will this work as diesels IIRC are only tested for smoke, not emissions?

I can see the point about just cutting open and taking internals out but it would have to be done, neatly from the top for the MOT tester not to see it when checking the underside of the car and only have to be a small sized hole, one like the above would be easy to spot i guess??

if you cut round the seam then weld it back i doubt they would know as some after market cats do have big welds on them and the cat above wouldnt look out of place................but if the cats broken down you can just take it off and get a metal pole to poke down the hole and brake the cat up without the need to cut it open.......if you do it this way just wear a mask and protective clothing as the cat itself has some nasty stuff in it thats not at all good for your health "RANGEISM WILL NOT BE TOLERATED"

when i used to break cars id sell them for between £30 - £60 a unit so a good bit of advice fromkingpleb

mind you ive only ever sold them when they was in the metal still ive never sold them out of there unit so am not sure if they will sell "RANGEISM WILL NOT BE TOLERATED"
