Aha, father in law recently replaced the pads, what do they do? |

They stop the pads from shifting about under braking - sometimes causing squeking - there are holes on the side of the pads where they go in, push the in with pliers and twist to lock them in place. 2006 MY Autobiography. With 'toys'

They are the pins and springs that hold the handbrake shoes in place. Number 11 and 12 in the picture below.

The scraping noise is caused by the brake shoes rubbing against the disc as the pins are not there to hold the shoes against the backplate. You need to have them fitted as soon as possible before further damage and expense occurs.

Right, sounds as though they could have fallen out due to corrosion as there would be no reason to go near these for pad replacement? Do you nee to take the disc off to access the backplate? |

If he only changed the pads it will not be his fault, the handbrake shoes have to be accessed by removing the discs.
