This is my first year of ownership of a FFRR (bought in April) and I want to buy 4 winter tyres for my TDV8 Vogue. I am tempted by these as they seem good value:

The reason for the question is because it is not always easy to source winter tyres in this country.

Is it better to buy now, or wait till September, October, November etc?

Is there likely to be more or less choice as we get nearer to Xmas?

Are prices likely to be higher or lower as we get nearer to Xmas?

I have already bought a spare set of 4 x 19" FFRR alloys in readiness for winter tyres.

My original spare wheel has a Pirelli Scorpion Zero M+S tyre on it. Would it be okay to still have this tyre as a spare when Wintrac Xtremes are on the other 4 wheels?

Good winter tyres low temp range were a god send last winter it's not getting going that is the problem its getting round the bend and stopping on normal rubber, just got mine last week on 20" Wintrac Extremes best tyre IMO been using them for sometime on var 4x4's inc RRS , Disco's and FFRR site sponsor on here is a dealer i think.

Last year winter tyres not only became near impossible to get but the prices went sky high as well due to short supply. Far to many gone...

If you can get Winter tyres it DOES make a big difference in snow & Icy conditions due to the softer Silica Compound.

do you have to tell your insurance co as well when fitting winter tyres, i gather its classed as a modification to the vehicle......

I've done a fair amount of winter driving in the FFRR and have never needed to use winter tyres. That being said, if money alowed I would probably get some. So if you have the money to spend on some then definately go for some.

19" wheels give you an extra bit of protection if you happen to slide a bit and clip a kerb which is supprisingly easy in the supermarket carpark etc.

The FFRR will do a lot even with some barely legal wranglers:

My car runs on 20"s but bought set of 19"winter tyres ( Wintrac 4xtreme) which are being delivered tomorrow from Tyremen in Hull. The difference in price between 255/55/19 and 255/50/20 is £35/tyre!!! that difference almost covered the cost of the 19" OE wheels ( virtually unmarked) that I bought on fleabay ......
...Got a set of 255/50/19 Wintrac's on OE wheels which came off my Sport that have done under 1100 miles if anyone is interested??

Got to disagree the winter tyres work better on crunchy stuff and ice that is where they are so much better than all weather / standard hard rubber , if you want just deep snow then a big block open tread like a grabber will work Far to many gone...
