Reduced Engine Performance - Fuel Pump

Ok. This is getting tedious.

Same story as before, driving along then the power starts to drop off. followed by reduced engine performance message

interestingly i have the same amount of fuel in the tank - 1/8th. The car runs with a rough idle for a minute or so missing like its starving of fuel?

Could this be related? Is there a dual pump/pickup system in the sc?

What else can i check whilst i wait 3 hours for the RAC again?

Are you sure there is actually enough fuel in the tank and the gauge is correct ? Far to many gone...

Home now. Not too bad...

Right, I "think" there is enough fuel in the tank, although it could be a bad guage/sender I guess. I put £30 in with the RAC guy and it ran better but still had a slight missfire.

I just drove it 500 yards from the transporter to the drive, it ran fine with no missfire at all. So it seems after something has cooled down it's happy again.

I've done some further research and the symptoms are very much like fuel starvation - so I am starting to think there is an issue with the fuel pump. The RRS SC suffers from the pump overheating and binding - hence loosing pressure.

I may sling a fuel pump in there to rule that out - trouble is I dont want to end up on the side of the M4 again Sad

Thanks guys.

Really thinking it's the pump - when the tank is full of fuel the pump is fully submerged so stays cool. When the tank is low (1/8th) then the pump is out of the fuel and heats up. The more I push it the hotter it gets until it starts to seize up.

I will test this theory tomorrow by filling the tank up and attempting my trip to Cardiff again! If i make it then that's the issue.

If I dont.... Then expect V3!

As you may know, there are two pickups in the tank as it's split in two (complicated much!?), I suspect one has failed - this is why the car is dying at 1/8th.

Always got the gaylander. Which in reality is a great little run around. 3.5V6, similar steptronic box and handles supprisingly well!

Also has a LOUD sound system. More quantity than quality, but it drowns out the general noise Smile

When I had my P38 on LPG I was told to keep at least a 1/3 of a tank of petrol to keep the pump cool and stop it working too hard. 2010 3.6TDV8 Stornoway Grey/ Black interior - gone
2005 4.4V8 (M62) Bonatti Grey/ Parchment interior - gone
1998 4.6HSE Blue/ Cream interior (can't remember exact colours) - gone
1977 White - gone (should have kept)

I think you may be onto something. Two of my last three BMWs (325tds & 530d) have died on the motorway whilst having about a quarter of a tank of fuel left. Both cars had this "saddlebag" type of tank, and the problem turned out to be a faulty transfer pump in one section of the tank. The process of getting the fuel from one section to the other, and getting a correct gauge reading is obviously quite complicated, but when the pump in question fails, the result is simple. I haven't considered the possibility of a blocked tank filter as a) this wasn't the cause of my problems, and b) I don't know if there is such a thing in a Full Fat.

Dan, who did you buy the RR from - private party or dealer?

If it's a private individual it's quite likely that this was a known problem (what are the odds that the car - otherwise perfect - suddenly has this problem within hours of your taking ownership?).
And if it's from a dealer...

Dan,
Just a small tip if you do replace the pump, when you lift it out make sure you disconect the remote pickup and sender unit. I have just changed the pump on my daughters L322 and kept pulling the pump out, this in turn disslodged the remote items. As the tank was full to the brim when the pump completely failed I ended up to the elbows in petrol to relocate and clip them back in place.

I've done mine too. Although I did it without taking the seats out, it would have made life a lot easier. Mine was full of fuel so not pleasant.

Another note is that the gauge remembers it's last level so don't add or remove fuel without it connected and powered or it will no longer be accurate.
