I dont think the police are afraid of being injured or restoring control but of the consequences if they get heavy handed with the rioters. there will be plenty of "innocent" that will try and make a complaint or try to sue the police if they get hurt. Whatever happened to the good old days when this type of behaviour was dealt with a Water Cannon? Not that dangerous to life and limb, but really unpleasant if you're on the wrong end of it.
Something's got to be done, and done quickly. Law abiding citizens are frightened, and angry at the authorities inability to deal with mob rule and anarchy.

apparantly there isn't a licence in place or something for the use of water cannon to be used, so they'd have to draw up and emergency law, if they have any water cannons available of course, according to ken livingston on the news last nite.

This is exactly the problem though.
People are allowed to comit crime and put innocent people in danger, but you can't sent in the heavy mob because you need a license to fire a water cannon at a law breaker?

WTF is going on in this country!

Once you comit a serious crime your human rights should be invalid. Fire away!

For me it's kind of like an active way of opting out of society- i.e. the protection that society can offer...

It's the same with gyppos.They rob, break traffic laws and intimidate yet if you react to them trying to move onto land the police can't do anything as it's a breach of their human rights.

I think we need a new definition of the word human...

Romford and Hornchurch were also hit last night I am hearing from staff that live in those areas this morning.
Basically smashing shops and running off with the contents.

i agree if they want to act like animals then we need to treat them as such and forget the water cannons lets just shoot them and as for the people that are just watching they should also get shot for being idiots and not going home "RANGEISM WILL NOT BE TOLERATED"

They have made an early start today.

At about 11am a bank in East Ham was set on fire and some shops attacked in Barking.
Currently we've got police not far away and a shopping area (including percy ingles where we get lunch) is being looted.

So in the interests of the business it's time to shut up shop and move the vehicles...

I never thought this would happen in the UK.

when the little start rioting give them 1 warning over loud speak to go home
then give them 5 minutes to leave the area
then out comes the 12 gauge riot gun and shoot on site
let me tell you, the only way to deal with scum is treat them like scum
