There are alternatives. I forget who it was who posted a thread on Vreds winter tyres, who found them excellent and just used them all year round. Nothing wrong with that. Also there are M&S tyres that are legal here in Switzerland all year. I think my summer tyres are actually M&S, but I only use them in Summer.

That was me.... Whistle

Sorry Gaz, should've remembered because it was such a good write up.

I actually thought about buying a set on your recomendation but then found I still have penty of tread on my current set. I will try them when I next need to change though.

The Wintrac Extremes seem to be well-liked, but looking at the tread pattern I can't imagine they're much good in mud or off the road.

Are there any ATRs with a winter-biased compound? Not sure I've ever seen any.

Fingers crossed this will happen as buying now is going to be a good way to have a zero cost of motoring if you sell at the end of february if there is a second snowfall, much like when the mini first came out(BMW version) when people ran them for a year or so and sold them on for no loss or even profit...
With the way current climate seems to be headed it could be a way to slowly work up the ffrr range or keep on owning an ffrr with little loss due to depreciation and maintenance...

When I get my ffrr I think vreds will be the way I go or maybe studded but they aren't cheap in 19" sizes lol

No, that's why they are winter tyres, not offroad tyres. Thumbs Up

And no again AFAIK. No FFRR sized all terrains that are also proper winter tyres that I know of. Different compounds. I'm guessing the softer compound would wear offroad too quickly. But happy to be proved wrong.

I've got general grabber at2's on my defender and in the snow they were brilliant, never drove on 'proper' snow tyres but I was more than happy with my at2's and they are good in mud too!!

I picked up a set of 2009 19" wheels with old Scorpion zeros on for £260.00. Just need the 255/55/19 Wintrac 4's now but my chosen supplier has sold out!

Been looking on here at all the replies and I've been persuader to go for the Vredestein Wintrac 4 Xtreme. BUT looking on a web site http://www.clickontyres.com Ive found 2 tyres that are slightly different in size but a vast difference in price.

255/60 R 18 Wintrac 4 Xtreme 112 H XL £169.01 each

255/55 R 18 Wintrac 4 Xtreme 109 V XL £132.00 each

The question is can I fit either of these tyres to my Td6?

the 255/60 is the proper size and the 255/55 is the old p38 range rover size...

i would stick to the 255/60 to avoid any insurance problems...

Umm maybe I should hang onto the set of 19" Pirelli Snow and Ice Tyres I have been trying to sell.
I ran my TDv8 RRS on snow tyres in July last year in an emergency after puncturing the two nearside 20" tyres the day before I had to drive to London and in the pouring rain over Shap the snow tyres also performed really well in aquaplaning sorts of situations. 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper S E All4 PHEV in Melting Silver - it’s whisper quiet in EV and polluter modes

bob, if you're going to spend £640 on tyres alone you might have a look at ebay..peeps sell wheels and tyres for much less than that and you might get lucky and get the tread type you want and have a set of spare rims as well..
