I did my turbo’s in the garage, it wasn’t the easiest job I read a few different ways of doing it, but in the end I found it easiest to remove the front end as that gave you the best access. My one had one leaking turbo and one that snapped the impeller and was ‘pouring’ oil into the intercooler!
I didn’t remove the front differential, which is what I think the Land Rover manual tells you to do.
The only ‘specialist’ tool I used was a cut down deep socket. I found getting a socket on the turbo to manifold nuts where really difficult to a socket on, but with a cut down deep socket and a couple of swivels they came off, well the whole stud came out anyway
I ended up going way over the top and doing the oil cooler, thermostat, water pump, injectors, rocker cover gaskets and a load of other bits, so it took quite a while, but if your just doing the turbo’s I think you could do it over a couple of weekends without to much trouble
