Oil level gauge Dipstick p400e

Hello,

I had my p400e serviced.

Arrived at home I checked the oil level it was 15mm above the max.

So I removed 0.5l of oil to be at about the level of the gauge (Dipstick)

By calling the garage he certifies me that he put the 7.02l that jlr recommends.

I then found a jlr action indicating level gauge errors.

I then decided to measure my Dipstick 78cm which corresponds to the metal part + the plastic part that fits into the metal tube (see photo)
and write down its serial number 54959D
and share with you.

Can you please check your level and check the serial number of your dispstick and its length? Thank you I hope the D at the end of the serial number is not for diesel? Which contains it 6.5 l...

That’s very interesting! At every oil change, I noticed that the level was way beyond the maximum limit—including the out of warranty oil change, where I personally added the exact amount of oil required. Right now, the car is unfortunately at the dealer, so I cannot verify the size of the dipstick or the number. However, as soon as I get it back, I will check and update you.
Thank you very much for sharing this!

Actually, I found out that this was discussed as early as 2021 and I forgot about it!

Thank you for your answers.

Adara, I can't wait to have the length when you get the vehicle back.

Because I removed 0.5l of oil and I'm still slightly above the max.

I played it safe: if my gauge is correct -> I'm at a level

If my gauge is wrong -> I drive with 0.5l less

This problem concerns only the 4-cylinder gasoline engine in lines si4 pt204 aj200p.

This engine is only mounted on the P400e, i.e. the PHEV model on our l405.

On the other hand, other models l494 ... also have a version si4 model p300 p250 p200 that can have the same problem.

All right, car back, so I checked, and the dipstick is exactly the same number as yours and also the same length, 78. Luckily, the oil level in mine is about 1 cm above the max level, as recommended in the bulletin. I'll have to keep that in mind for the next changes...

Great thank you very much 👍, so I will add the 0.5l that I drained, the dealer was right, they put the right amount 7.02 l

It's our baguettes that are wrong!

How can you guys read the oil level? When I pull the dip stick out the oil is smeared well above the max level. Even after cleaning and reinsertion it’s still too messy to read.
Any advice?

Looks like this when pulled out. Also the dipstick has the model number 54959G.

It shouldn't be like that. Did you measure after 15 minutes with engine off?

BTW, how long is your dipstick?

I measured it this morning with a cold engine. Also seems to make no difference whether I clean it. It comes out full of oil. I will measure it.

Spot on 78cm. Wonder if the stupid cork screw design brings up the oil in the dip shaft. Impossible to get a reading - or it might be overfilled by 10cm or so.

Try to push it several times (5- 10) without pushing it all the way (you let it come out 10cm)

And you wipe every time.

This will clean all the metal duct.

And then you make a normal measurement (flat car after 10 minutes of stop)

Thanks - good advice. Haven’t thought about that. Will try it later.
