Total respect to all the previous posters in this thread, for some insightful and very personal experiences in the interest of helping others come forward and be tested.

I wonder if the forum Mods would consider moving this to a more discrete “Health & Welfare” section, it all seems a bit “public” or is that the whole idea , to encourage awareness?

I am totally humbled by others frankness and it’s remarkable that you have the strength to share this stuff to help others who may be blissfully unaware, respect.  “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Gremlin, I am quite happy for this to be an open subject. I will bore anyone about this, as many of my colleagues will testify. The more of us who are open about it the more others will realise getting tested and possible outcomes should have no fears.

Me too Andy hence why I posted on here. it seems we may have started something of a good thing in all fairness. I'll be very open to discussion on this.
Just today I had a call from the ED nurse to give me a heads up on what to expect after the operation. To tell you the truth after that call, it's starting to hit home a lot more. Funny thing was though, I wasn't embarrassed talking about it, it is what it is. I've already spoken to my girlfriend about it, I even gave her a get out of jail free card and she's having none of it. She was more upset that I mentioned it, but hey the mind wanders when hit with such unfortunate news. It's going to be a long hard recovery on that score (no pun intended ). Didn't realise there was that much help available for that sort of thing, but I'll take what I can. Been told anything from a year to 18 months. During the op the surgeons always try to avoid nerves but it's not always possible, hoping that mine been be saved.
Gremlin, could be the way forward me thinks. We all ask questions on here about our fattys to get them fixed, so why not ask questions about how to get ourselves fixed? Cars can be replaced, we can't. So if anyone wants to ask me or anyone else on here questions, then feel free to ask. I'll be open and honest about it. And yet the hardest part so far from all this, is not hearing the words you have prostate cancer, it was telling my 14yo daughter, something I hopefully never have to do again, so very painful indeed.

My father in law is currently coming to the end of his treatment, hormone and radiotherapy and by all accounts it’s been “ok” he’s taken a pragmatic approach, and has talked about it, which I think really helps. And he will be ok.

I used to work for a medical devices company and have spoken to probably thousands of men post-op; guiding them through product usage whilst they were on the mend so I do have an inkling into the subject and an appreciation of the journey.

The challenge comes from men having places to talk about this stuff, the forum adds a layer of anonymity that probably helps a lot.

Hi BB - I had surgery on my prostate, which involved burning away part of it from the inside. What gave me the confidence to go for it was the attitude of the surgeon, which was very matter of fact. I can’t imagine the discomfort from a total removal is any worse than having part of it burnt off, so I’d say go for it, don’t worry about it, enjoy the drugs and come out the other side ticking it off on your jobs to get sorted list.

It’s the equivalent of an oil cooler on a 4.4 TDV8. They get done all day, every day and as long as the rest of the car is looked after, it’ll go on well into the hundreds of thousands of miles.

Admittedly the bodywork may start to get a little shabby as time goes on, but nothing a bit of love on a Sunday morning won’t cure.

That's another reason I posted on here Tommy, I don't do social media, I actually hate all social media. If it was posted on the likes of FB, they know everything about you and then you'd probably get some unscrupulous fraudster trying to trick you out your hard earned beer vouchers. There's that anonymity on here, though have met a couple of members on here when buying and selling. Unlike social media where everyone posts pics of themselves in a hospital bed just to garner likes, sympathy and replies, the sad times we live in eh?
Hehe Jonny enjoy the drugs. Well there is them I can have via injection or use a pump. All a bit strange to me, but if it works it works, I will find out soon enough. I'm sure your experience wasn't very pleasant either, but all I can do is share my story after removal.
I'm a HGV driver, now sometimes when I frequent truck stops up and down the country, some usually have wellness events for us truckers, but it's only usually about unhealthy living on the road, high blood pressure, diabetes etc etc nothing ever about prostate cancer.
Next time I'm at one I shall give it a mention.

Had my PSA blood test a couple of days ago. Not got the results yet. Was very lucky to be sent for an ultrasound liver scan in 2023 where they discovered I had renal cancer. Caught it in time and had my right kidney removed. Scans are showing clear at the moment. Like everyone else I had no symptoms at all.

I'm rather shocked really, I thought I would get best wishes replies which is not what I wanted, but to have other members on here talk about it too openly. Thank you for sharing your experiences too guys, means a lot.

Just to add some context, cancer is not the end of the world these days I am 10 years post chemo + surgery you will always be looking over your shoulder but still punching above my weight and enjoying life I dodged a bullet twice.......I love my NHS

Totally agree Max, my sister just got over breast cancer and got the all clear. My boss's wife had had it 3 times in the just 10 years, cervical and lung cancer, she's had part of her lung removed and just finished chemo for the other lung cancer, so the NHS do a great job.
Thanks rambling man, to be honest I it's been easy opening up about it on here, especially like you say us men don't really talk about things like this. But if it takes just one to sit up and notice and get checked then that's a good thing. Just like you now going to have a PSA test. Hopefully it will be very low and nothing to worry about.

Johnny, I've got an appointment on Tuesday with a different consultant as he can get me in quicker to do the operation, lots of questions to be asked me thinks. I also have a pre assessment on the 15 April, so I'm thinking it could be around end of April early may time. The hospital have been really good in phoning me up and sorting out information for what to expect after the op. I think that's when it's going to me the most as I need to have help in regaining continence, pelvic floor exercises etc etc. Then there's the erectile dysfunction that will need addressing. Normally 95% of men regain normal function with the help they provide, vacuum pump, injections, however Viagra doesn't work on 98% of men that have had their prostate removed. Should I be embarrassed talking about this? Yes I should in different circumstances, but I'm just putting out there as what to expect should anyone here have to go through the same, so I'm not embarrassed at all about it. Let's face it, I'm rather lucky in it being caught early, sad news about Eddie Jordan today, that's how it started for him and then there's Chris Hoy. I will keep you all posted with updates, especially on Tuesday.

Thanks Andy, I'm sure all will be fine with yourself. I thinks it's more worrying if the PSA rises a lot higher than normal. I had 2 PSA tests within 2 weeks and went from 7.5 to 8.0 in those 2 weeks which of course got the ball rolling. Though it is normal for PSA levels to rise and fall but only when they are in tolerance.
