Are early 3.0 that much more unreliable than the 4.4?

Hello,

Hoping for some advice?

I'm looking at getting my first FFRR and with prices the way they are at the moment why not.

But I hear horror stories about the 3.0 and crankshafts but are these to be believed?
I would prefer to get the colour and spec I want instead of upgrading to the 4.4 but is this wise?

Thanks

I've had 6 LR cars with the 3.0l engine and never had a problem with any of them. The latest MHEW is brilliant so I'd recommend the engine. It is economical, smooth and quick. All LR cars from 1984

It’s a real lottery with the 3.0 v6, there’s thousands out there running perfectly with over 100k miles on them. On the negative side, I work for an LR Indie and these along with the 2.0 ingenium cars are the ones we see the most of with engine failure, the V8 on the other hand seems to be more robust and I’ve only seen one failure in 5 years, that was due to poor service history. If you do go for a 3.0 my best advise would be a full service history essential and keep your oil changed every 6 to 8 k miles at the most. Also if you can get a warranty its worth it.

I owned a 3.0 litre Disco for a few years and had no issues. I bottled it and got rid of it when a friend had his crank snap on his 3.0 litre at 2 years and less than 30k miles, luckily for him LR picked up the £20k bill. Mine was out of warranty and I didn’t want to risk it.

It was a 15 plate that no longer appears on the mot check site, could just be on a private plate or could be the dreaded crank failure Whistle

I can vouch for what diesel Dave says as well, as I also have an 2.0 ingenium engined RR Sport, the engine went bang at 59k, followed by the turbos at 64k Censored

Land Rover should hang their heads in shame that such rubbish is allowed to leave the factory.

I'm getting the feeling that 4.4 is a safer bet?
Is the 3.0 as big of a problem in the sport? I've only really heard it being as big of an issue in the full fat. Could be wrong

Yes same issues in the sport, in fact the sport has the most powerful unit mapped to 306 BHP so is under more stress. L405 has two variants at 254BHP single turbo and 275 BHP twin turbo.

Also the 4.4 has the stability control system which makes cornering so muuuuuuuch better.

the 3.0L doesn't AFAIK.

The dealers I use have stopped selling second hand 4.4s as one can no longer get replacement engines (other than from a donor car), they do still sell second hand 3.0 V6 (or D300/350) 405s. Only Range Rovers since 1988

I’ve owned 3 x 4.4 V8 Diesels - all absolutely faultless - all serviced by main agent on the dot.
My brother has also had 3 x 5.0 SC - again all faultless apart from timing chain on one of them.

1 x 3.0 V6 in the family and a good friend also with a 3.0 V6 Diesel - both catastrophically failed with massive repair costs.

So the opposite for me, my 3.0 was issue free for 4 years, not one warranty claim. It had done 60000 miles when i changed for the 4.4 V8. It was as new with only a few thousand miles on clock. 18 months in and engine failed with 25000 miles and needed replacement. As mentioned, LR no longer make the 4.4 V8 diesel.

6 months in the dealership and a lot of heartache, but JLR did stand by the car and purchased it at market value with a failed engine. They even give me my extended warranty money back.

The concensus above says that whatever you go for, it’s a lottery.
In defense of the V6, of course the number of failures will be massively skewed by the sheer number of those sold vs the V8, and with the 2.0 Ingenium engined vehicles sold in even more prodigious quantities, the statistics appear to paint a grim, but not necessarily proportionate, picture.

And of course, the oldest chestnut of all, you only ever hear of failure, no-one reports success, that’s just too boring…….. Whistle “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?
