A couple of ride height sensor questions

My 2003 TD6 is currently stuck in a super extended height, and up on 4 drive on ramps. Im taking the opportunity to underseal it.

While cleaning it i notice the R/H rear ride height sensor, the lower part that fixes to the lower arm was dangling free.

Would the (unplanned) super extended height of done this?

Can I replace the height sensor while it’s up on ramps, and in the current extended height? (Didn’t want to fit a new sensor and it be out of range/reach)

Or get the car back down on level ground, try and reset the suspension height to something normal, then jack it up and replace the ride height sensor?

And anything else worth replacing or checking while it’s up in the air?

It can't go too high, it has it's limits which ensure no damage to components...

You can change the sensor fine, (soak nuts/bolts in WD40 etc as they can seize) I'd check the others, if one has failed the others may not be far behind, you could try moving the broken arm to see if the suspension moves but be very careful, getting under a car with a broken sensor is a lottery, ensure a door is open to stop any suspension movement...

It's probably the sensor, the car keeps trying to rise but that sensor tells it it's still low... Thumbs Up Pete

Thanks Pete

Think a combination of issues contributed to it. Car had been stood for a couple of months. Couldn’t get down one side of the car as it was against a wall, flat tyre (n/s rear) and a partially deflated tyre (o/s front).
iiD first showed suspension rear n/s as -114 and the others as plus values.
Think I’ll fit both new rear sensors (RQH100030), get it on level ground and try and reset the suspension-level it.
Will check the brass sintered filter is clean or drill a small hole in it as that may be a reason it’s refusing to deflate too
Im sure I’ll be back this week after more head scratching Big Cry

You can try two things with IID - it may reset and get you back to normal heights

1) Go to Suspension / Guided Calibration and go through the guide from beginning to end, making sure at the end to press one of the EAS buttons eg Access Mode or Off Road Extended

2) Menu--Service Test--Suspension--Re Enable will return it to normal

Thanks pcourtney - I'll go through the guided calibration once its down on firm ground again. Going to replace all 4 height sensors while its in the air.

I'm sure years ago when i replaced the front air bags that burst I had a similar issue with it returning to super extended height when the next bags were fitted, and a few metres driving seemed to reset the height to something close to normal.

Update all (and a plea for help) Big Cry

It feels as though something needs resetting before I can do a guided calibration.
Car is still in super extended height. I went through on iiD tool and tried to deflate corners, reservoir and then ‘deflate all’ . Nothing. Car still in the air even though iiD says ‘procedure complete’.
Even tried ‘transport mode’ and the access height button, nothing.

No EAS faults when scanned.

Reservoir pressure is at 161 psi.
Compressor temperature is 48 degC.

Started guided calibration even with it stuck in the air but the variation between actual values of all 4 corners and the measurements I’d be taking varied so much i didnt think it would work.

Example, iiD showing current heights:
FrontLeft 177mm
FrontRight 183mm
RearLeft 160mm
RearRight 147mm

Where as realistically current measurements are approx 640mm all round.

Also, I couldn’t find the live voltage values for each corner ride height sensors? Wanted to to see if any are dead (I’ve got 2 new rears to fit but haven’t yet, wanted it down to a normal height before changing them.

Any ideas please?

Thanks Stan I’ll try it soon as I’m home. Do you mean the middle ‘lock’ button, or hold the toggle in the lower position?

I take it you have tried a battery disconnection...?

I'd fit the two rear sensors, with a door open, then try a reinstate

If that doesn't work I think I would pull a pipe and create a leak to get it down, then try to reinstate it...

Good luck.. Thumbs Up Pete

You can see these in RLM - Suspension

Go to "Live Values" RLM-Suspension The select ( the option changes colour to green )

Front Left Height Sensor - Voltage (V)
Front Left Height Sensor Supply ( V )
Front Right Height Sensor - Voltage (V)
Front Right Height Sensor Supply ( V )

Rear Left Height Sensor - Voltage (V)
Rear Left Height Sensor Supply ( V )
Rear Right Height Sensor - Voltage (V)
Rear Right Height Sensor Supply ( V )

Those readings are a bit misleading, according to Patrick ( at GAP ) it's just an arbitrary constant and does not refer to the actual height measurement.

NB I had to check myself what "arbitrary constant" means
An Arbitrary Constant is a placeholder used in Mathematical Expressions to represent a Value that can be freely chosen, often appearing in Solutions to differential equations or Indefinite Integrals. It allows for the Generalization of solutions, ensuring they encompass all possible specific cases by accounting for "Initial Conditions" or "Boundary Values" that can alter the outcome.
