oil overfill

noticed yesterday oil level saying overfill...had service done in oct 24 at ind garage so they must have done it. had no leaks or problems that i know of since then and no warnings on dash so how bad is this issue? some advice on the net says it could be sensor or/amd no worries but others say drop some oil. spoke to garage and taking it in tomorrow to check problem is it has to stand for hrs after driving before you can check so could be there all day. anyone have any advice, due to drive 300 miles next week for a holiday, usually im only doing local trips. thanks guys.

Probably due to 'oil dilution' particularly if it was filled to the top after the last service. Additionally, some garages replace the amount that they drained out, which can be too much......

So do you think it's a problem and I should get them to drop some oil tomorrow then. Any idea on how much to drop or is that a stupid question? Thanks

Better to get some sucked out till it's at the correct level or a bit lower, dropping oil doesn't usually end well...!!!

Open the bonnet, select oil level and press the cruise cancel button twice and it will give you a reading, this just means you don't have to wait the 10mins it usually takes... Thumbs Up Pete

I didnt know to do that. I've been doing it through the service menu. And mine takes at least 2 maybe 3 hrs after driving to let you check nevermind 10 mins. Nightmare. Thank you.

“Churning” is the word.
If the oil level gets so high the crankshaft makes contact with the oil, bad things happen…..
Highly unlikely to be caused by dilution in 5/6 months, but remotely possible if you do a huge number of short journeys and don’t bother to monitor regens. Suspect it was filled almost to the trigger level when serviced.
Get the excess oil out before you drive further! “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Thank you , strangely since I put this post up I've gone to check oil and opened bonnet and door went to oil level and straight away let me see it and it said oil level ok. I'm now wondering if it's a sensor. Regarding regens it about every 6 weeks. Thoughts ?

I have noticed that even the slightest of slopes results in a different reading. Geoff

Change the oil its fuel dilution, otherwise the overfilled alarm would have been on in October. 2018 SE SDV8 4.4 Byron Blue

Ummmm, whoa there everyone, before we all get carried too far away from reality here:
OP, what’s ur mileage since the service?

As a guide, my (almost 100%) urban mileage gives 1% dilution per 2500 miles (based on regular oil sampling every 6 months for the past 3 years), that’s 60ml for a TDV6, or about 90ml for a 4.4V8, less what volume the engine is burning, say 20ml-30ml, so around 20,000-30,000 miles of mall-crawling, per 500ml self-inflicted “top-up”.

Sorry boys, it just ain’t gonna happen, so I’m calling Bullsh*t on that whole idea. Evil or Very Mad “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Oil is cheap I would never chance it! It's easy to do yourself.
I always get minimum 10L out and only put in 9.3L so for my driving style the Incontrol algorithm is pretty accurate. And thats 4 oil changes per year! 2018 SE SDV8 4.4 Byron Blue

Yes, I respect and would never argue with that, I change my own oil every 2500 miles/6months, that wasn’t quite the point though:
I’m surprised that my own measured dilution (on a 50K mile engine) is way less, both in 3rd-party oil analysis by %, and by the less exacting fact that I get out, and put back in, exactly 6L each time. So, I fill to “Max” (not “Min” “or halfway to “Max”) yet the volume seems not to increase at all?
So, it’s surprising to me, that others get a real volume of something, difference per biannual OC?

And no, before some wit quips in, I’m not auditioning for the Red Arrows Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

Do I apparently have the best engine JLRF ever produced? (Ovbs by accident Laughing )

Mileage at service 70937 23/10/24
Mileage now 73241
So roughly 2400 miles of local driving averaging between 18 and 23mpg from on board display.
I know I've had yellow regen notice at least twice possibly 3 times , quickly cleared.
Never had an oil overfill warning come on the display ( if they have that on my 2013) only found this issue when I checked as I'm driving 150 miles to holiday on Sunday and same back a week later.
I have my oil level this morning cold and it says over filled , yeas last nigh in same spot it was warm and said it was fine .
Could it be a sensor ? Do I get the garage to drop the oil even after just 2400 miles, some say urban driving oil needs changing more often ? If it was overfilled in Oct service which garage who I trust say wouldn't have been the case as there's just 2 of them, they said they double check all oil levels I haven't noticed any leaks. I'm so confused as what to do for the best. Last thing I did this trip 3 weeks after that service and it was fine. Thoughts.

Yes, I agree now too Rolling with laughter

Your dilution can’t be much more than 1%, so a tiny extra volume.

To physically check the amount in there, you’re going to have to suck it out and measure the volume, so you may as well do an oil & filter change anyway. Get an oil analysis done for further peace of mind.
From there, you’ll begin to have a much better understanding of your car and what’s going on, maybe start to monitor soot and regens also? Thumbs Up “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?
