Cheers - I can feel myself being slowly dragged into Fatty ownership. My hands are clutching at remnants of reasons not to do it, but I think it’s futile.

Is there more hiding under the sill cover on these or are they not too bad ?

Looks a bit dodgy for a 12 plate. Does it look like it has different paint as if it's been tinkered with before in that area?

Also, MOT 2017 shows 112000, MOT 2024 shows 13500 miles. Looks like the speedo has been changed. It has no MOT now.

Thanks all - investigating all areas of concern and asked for pics with the sill covers off. I’m quite a distance from it, so can’t just pop round.

There are plenty of good cars around - personally I wouldn’t waste your time on the car with questions on its history and mileage.

Thanks Jon - what’s sensible money for a good car, private seller with no rust/sills sorted |

Unfortunately that’s difficult as the price range can be anything from £7k through to £14k for a rock solid one with loads of history etc etc. The trick is knowing the weak points in these things and from a bodywork perspective the sills and rear arch’s are where they tend to rot. If you are not in a hurry take some time to read up in here as much as you can and it will be time well spent. However, don’t be swayed into buying a car at a distance, get in front of it and you’ll very quickly get a feel for how it’s been looked after. Personally high mileage doesn’t bother me PROVIDING that’s it’s got a lower number if owners - the more owners it’s gone through the higher chance it’s been neglected at some point. There’s no right answers here, but sometimes meeting the seller gives you a big insight. And lastly, keep your eye out on here. Members regularly sell cars on the forum and I’m sure it’s a good place to start, possibly at a premium sometimes but you get what you pay for sometimes. J |

Very useful thanks. At £5-£5.5k possibly worth a punt then ? I know a good paint man who’s been doing the sills and arches on these for 15 yrs or so and have an excellent indy who’s very close. I do like a bit of spannering, so oil cooler seals etc don’t phase me.

Yes at that price you have some head room for “sorting it” but just bear in mind everything is quite pricey to fix in these, struts on a 4.4 are significantly more than say a 3.6 and so on.

Thanks Scouse - although my indy says the 3.6 tdv8 is the best engine JLR ever made and the 4.4s are much harder to work on, the last iteration of the L322 is the one that’s tugging at my shirt tails. |
