L322 and Oil dilution

I'm looking at moving back to Range Rover after 10 years away. I'm looking at either late L322 or early L405, Having read about oil dilution, can I ask does the late L322 suffer this problem as much as the 405 does ?

I'm afraid I can't give you any specific figures, but I can tell you my experiences with two 4.4 TdV8's.

My Wife and I both run them as daily's. Hers only does short runs and rarely goes on any longer journeys. It does 7 miles each way to where she works about 3 times a week, which means it's started cold for each 7 mile run. We've owned it for 5 years and covered just over 30k miles in it. It's always run on premium fuel (usually Shell, because that's the local fuel station) and I change the oil every 7k miles for a good quality C1 (using Millers at the moment) of the correct grade. Never had any DPF or other engine related issues. My car does longer journeys, owned for about the same time and done 50k miles in it, also observe same oil change intervals and fuel, no issues. Drives:

Scotland 2012 Range Rover Westminster TDV8 Fuji White

Hi, my 4.4 Westie I use for the school run each day, shopping and general about town use and then a weekly 100 mile sprint to Reading and back, Bristol etc, no issues at so far either with the oil or DPF.

However, I change the oil every 5k as a habit, but I've never had any fuel smell when changing it, nor any increase in oil volume.

I don't think the 4.4 has any inherent issue to be honest, it happens with all diesels but not overly so on the fatty. Some other cars I've had i.e. Mazda & Audi suffered quite badly from it.

I've heard people suggest using 5W40 to compensate, but that just seems a daft solution.

I don't think either the 4.4 TDV8 L322 or L405 suffer particularly with oil dilution problems, more than any other vehicle. It's all down to driving habits, i.e. many short journeys, never getting a 'good run', lack of regular servicing - will all cause issues.

When buying, avoid vehicles that have done lots of short trips and / or have poor service history. I realise the first point around usage is hard to determine! But a vehicle that's been 'used' with reasonably high mileage per year would be a good sign to me. I personally avoid DPF equipped vehicles that have lived in Central London, for example, when looking for a used vehicle. I might be missing out on a brilliant vehicle, but it's just what I do.

Don't let the possibility of oil dilution affect your wish to get back into a RR. This phenomenon affects all DPF equipped vehicles, not just JLR products!
