Seeking feedback from those who drive in snow and ice

I have had my 2013 L405 for over a month and found out pretty quickly my particular vehicle did not at all feel very stable in bad road conditions. FWIW, My outgoing Evoque never had any issues with winter road conditions and tires are about the same remaining tread depth.

Bushings were shot on forward LCA, so replaced those along with rearward LCA. Sway bar bushings and end links look fine, no leaky ACE. LCA change made very small difference. Took for alignment and shop said it was within spec.

Tires are Continental Winter Contact with about 6/32" tread depth, fairly even wear all around. I know they are nearing end of life, but still surprised at how very little grip I feel. Tires passed safety inspection but maybe they should not have at that tread depth. It is fine on cleared roads, but once I hit a patch of packed snow or ice, it feels like I am seriously going to crash and have to slow way down to feel any sense of control, and even then, I am constantly correcting the steering as it slides around.

I live in Alberta, Canada and winter conditions can be pretty bad so I know slower driving is sometimes needed but I am going 25-40km/h below limits to stay in control, which I have never had to do before with any vehicle, even with worn tires.

For those that experience winter conditions, how do you judge the performance of the L405 in bad road conditions? Is there anything about it that feels a little loose and floaty, specifically in snowy and icy roads? Is it simply down to overly worn tires, perhaps they are very sensitive to tire choice? I thought I could get another 10K or so from 6/32" Continentals, but maybe too optimistic and they are done. Appreciate any feedback.

My 2016 same issue

My 2016 L405 does not handle well in snow or ice. I have the continental extreme contact dws06's with about same wear as yours. I never feel the 4 wheel traction. My 1982 jeep laredo goes though snow and ice full traction. Im not wild about the terrain selector either.

IMHO the tyres are far too wide for proper control on snow and ice, much thinner ones would give a far better feeling...

Tyre type, tread depth and pressure have a large effect on stability.... Pete

I agree, that the L405 is a little disappointing in snowy and icy conditions even with studded winter tires compared to my previous L322 which had Pirelli Scorpions. The rear of the L405 feels like it's floating when turning, while retaining some traction.

The terrain response set to "snow" helps a little bit in my opinion.

Even my RR Classic 1990 handled better without all the bells and whistles.

I find it great in the snow. You need new winter tires.

I have Continnental xrtm factory studded tires in 255/55R20.

The previous Evoque is lighter, smaller, and will feel different. The L405 is larger and heavier making it feel different too. Get new winter tires and report back. Dan. 🇨🇦 2013 L405 5.0 SCV8
