What would you do - please

My 2012 4.4 TDV8 has been suffering from squeeling when cold from the aux belt area. It goes when warmed up and the belt is in really good condition. It was replaced 3 years ago. My alternator is fine.

I just got a price from Maltings to replace both belts, all tensioners/pulleys/idlers, water pump and alternator using genuine parts. It's not a cheap job but considering the size of the job i am happy with the quote.

Today I sprayed a small amount of vinyl and rubber care on the belt whilst running and the noise stopped instantly.

So, would you go ahead and have the job done or leave it for now and just monitor belt condition?

Leave it. Some dodgy dealers would do the same and charge for a replacement!!  The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom

If it was replaced three years ago I’d definitely leave it. Talc has the same effect on a squeaky belt albeit a bit more messy but can be used to at least prove concept that the belt is the cause instead of a pully etc.

You haven’t said what the quote is though so it’s hard to be definitive with the advice.

Interesting use for talc and not one I had heard of before.

I was convinced a bearing had started to go so at least I know they are all OK.

The genuine parts - belts and all tensioners, pulleys and idlers came to £520

Water pump £110

Alternator £290

4 hours labour

They haven't told me this all needs doing. They are not close to me but seem to have a good reputation so I asked for a quote to do this work.

I am going to continue to monitor the belt atm.

The link below is an example of belt dressing spray, commonly used in industry for many applications.
This can stop belts making such noise. There are countless other brands available.

I would not change all those components without a thorough inspection / diagnosis by a competent mechanic / technician, it sounds a bit like 'firing the parts cannon' at the car

Personally I would use said spray and monitor the situation. Been using these sprays at sea for many different types of belts for years with good results. Hope this helps

How long are you planning on keeping the car?
I wouldn’t spend the money if you might change the car shortly but if you are planning on keeping it you might as well do the lot. If it hasn’t had an alternator it will probably need one shortly and they rarely give any warning before leaving you stranded.
