Last week I had the dreaded Parking brake fault red light, brake stuck on, no joy trying to reverse but forward was a struggle, luckily I was on the drive at the time. Some context to this, last year I waded through 2 feet of water to get to work and had the yellow parking brake fault, though it reset after I left the car for a bit and pushed the brake peddle and hand brake button.

I called the breakdown company who came out the next day to take the car from my drive to a local garage. I thought I'd give it one last shot, low and behold the parking brake released its self and all was fine. The recovery company still took the car to my local garage, who have quoted for a brake caliper. Reading the forum here, it seems to be an issue with the actuator ( I can see a crack in it). My question is, if it's a faulty caliber surely the brake would not work and in reality only the actuator needs replacing. You've bought WHAT!!

I had a similar issue after jet washing a bit too vigorously. The fault cleared when dry but came back when wet again. I just swapped out the Actuator. An easy DIY job. Took me max 20mins with the suspension on highest setting for easy access. I didn’t even need to remove the wheel.
Got a pattern part of eBay which looked identical to the one I removed. Never had the problem again. 2013 SDV8 4.4 Vogue SE Aintree

If it was the caliper it would be a mechanical fault causing things to get hot. Yours is an electrical fault so my money would be on the actuator.

The actuators split where the spigot on the caliper over which they fit corrodes. Once split, water can get in.

When I changed mine (they are very cheap), I cleaned off the spigot, in particular the o-ring groove such that the new actuator slid over nicely and sealed.

thanks for the info, one question I have is, my mechanic disconnected the cable to the actuator to stop it seizing. I can reconnect it but do I need to put the EPB into service mode to remove the actuator?
