TD V6 Vs SD V6 Vs V6 Petrol Supercharged?

Hi

I am brand new to the forum and the world of Range Rovers so apologies for asking what I imagine is a frequently asked question.

I am thinking boy buying a RR Vogue or possibly a sport around 2018-2020 MY and have read / heard various horror stories about crankshaft failures.

I am looking for any advice on my best option.
Is the TD V6 better than the SD V6 or vice versa. I get the impression most of the crankshaft failures happen on the TD.
Is the 3 litre petrol better than the diesel?
Would I be better with the V8 4.4 diesel which doesn't seem to have the crankshaft issue?

Thanks

I am really wrong person to ask as Petrol all day long for me.

3.0 V6 Supercharged Petrol in Vogue SE spec only and a very capable engine but revs higher than V8 obviously.
5.0 V8 Supercharged Petrol in AB and SV spec only, there are various BHP versions, 510, 525 & 565 depending on Spec and age.

In my view I would always go Petrol but I am bias.

Both Petrol engines will at some point suffer with Timing Chain and guides so buy carefully as always. The key is good and frequent maintenance.

I am sure my Diesel loving friends will be along shortly to put me right.

I suggest you drive both Diesel and Petrol as only you know what will suit your journeys and driving style.

Good luck in what ever you decide, may the fun and games commence. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

If you are rural and dont use a motorway much, then consider that Diesel fuel dilution will become an issue, to an extent, that you will need to change oil etc every 2 to 3k miles.
I love the car, love the SDV8, but if I could, knowing what I know now, and had the cash, it would be a 5L petrol. Just be aware! there will be a lot of old school owners out there ignoring service update messages and changing oil every 16k miles or yearly as its advertised to run with that regime Whistle
The 2018+ range is the better range with better security and improved entertainment system etc 2018 SE SDV8 4.4 Byron Blue

As a diesel owner I agree with Kot to some extent, it’s not so much the oil dilution as the weekly faff of having to waste £20 of fuel on the motorway just to clear the DPF. After a few oil samples, my dilution is only about 1% per 2500-3000m of round-town driving, then due to low mileage it’s time for a 6-month oil & filter change anyway. I’d probably go for a 3.0 petrol hybrid next time if I had the money TBH. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

I had an SDV6 3.0 ltr Discovery on a 15 plate. Best Land Rover I’ve ever owned and the most reliable. Regret selling it to this day.

The dreaded crank failure was something that often crossed my mind. It had just passed its 3rd birthday and even LR’s extended warranty (3rd party to all intents and purposes) wasn’t covering the fault Whistle

But I persevered because it was such a great car.

A few months down the line a friend had his 16 plate go bang with crank failure at 29k miles. Still under manufacturers warranty so LR had to foot the bill. Total cost wasn’t far short of £20k if he’d had to pay lt Shocked

I lost my bottle and got rid. I look on the mot checker every year and it still seems to be doing fine Big Cry

Probably quite a rare failure in reality.
