It's looking more and more likely that my trip to the Alps neat year is happening. As we'll be there in January, I'd like to have some snow chains alongside the new tyres, just in case. Can anyone recommend any for 20" wheels?

I have Thule / Konig K77´s

Hard to review really as I've had 2 sets (4 chains) for probably 10 or more years and never had to put them on in anger, though they do spend the entire winter in the boot.....

I live in a ski resort and have Conti winter tyres which are excellent IMHO - hence not actually ever needing the chains despite driving on some fairly bad roads over the years with most other people not being able to continue without chains.

The K77´s have nothing around the back which is where the clearance problems are with regular chains. It also means they are way easier to fit, though I've only ever practiced in a warm & dry garage.

They are also adjustable - IIRC there are 5 removable links, so they fit a range of tyre sizes, there´s a chart telling you how many to remove for your specific tyre size. Therefore they should be useable on whatever my next purchase is if it´s a similar size to a FFRR.

If your near Tonbridge, go and see these people. Really helpful, bought a few sets of chains from them over the years.

I don't know if you're fixed with chains yet but I've upgraded from an L405 to an L460. I have a set of Thule K77's that are unused (bar a trial fit), the L460 need K79's so I have to upgrade. If you're interested we can perhaps do a deal.

I’ve got several set in the garage I’ve accumulated over the years, for different cars. The only ones I’ve ever fitted were to our Octavia. I’ve also had to put them on a hire car once. And I’ve been driving to the alps on and off for 25 years.

IMHO, you will probably not need them and if you do it will be for a short trip, So get the best value set you can. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I was really trying to contact Robster to see if he’d bought some K77’s as I had a set of 4 which might suit.
In the many years I’ve been driving to the Alps I too have never needed to fit chains. However we visit a minor resort up a narrow road and we do know, if you hit the wrong weather, that the local gendarmerie will stop cars and check if they have winter tyres fitted and/ or chains so best to be on the safe side.

To round this off, the snow chains I bought from Tim arrived today. Hopefully I won't be needing them but it's great to have them, just in case.
