I had one for 6 years. Utterly reliable and a joy to own. They need looking after though and nothing about them is cheap!

That’s a question impossible to answer, it depends on too many factors.
LR products have always been consistently near the bottom of the JD Power surveys over the years, and any 8-year-old vehicle is a reliability risk, there is no way of knowing how well or poorly it has been serviced, or sympathetically it has been driven, or thrashed mercilessly.
A warranty or big wedge of cash is your best friend (lets not open that debate )
So is a thorough pre-purchase inspection by a knowlegeable or professional person.

These are large, heavy complex vehicles, and there is lots to service, and potentially lots to go wrong.

It’s the vehicles which are given preventive maintenance like (but not limited to) 6-month oil & filter changes, corrosion prevention measures, frequent owner underbody and suspension inspections, frequent lubrication and other fluid changes, frequent owner DTC scans etc. which stand the best chance of being “reliable”, it’s not a hope-and-pray thing, it’s very much owner-interactive.

My advice is to view at least a dozen cars before buying, you will get a better idea of the good and the bad, there are a lot of unloved vehicles out there. If you are mechanically adept, you can save a lot of money, and be sure about your vehicles’ condition going forward.

Are the insurance standard with these as well?

Not sure what you mean by 'standard', but currently most owners are finding them costly to insure. When I bought mine in Nov 2019 I paid £350 for the year. This year I'm paying £900 odd.

So, before committing to buy get some quotes and see if you can live with them. 2017 SDV8 Autobiography

Just sold my 17my 2016 4.4 SDV8 AB. Bought it at 18 months old with 50k miles plus on clock with FSH.
Sold it with 96k miles & FSH all main dealer.
Apart from servicing when due no bills or dramas.
Changed the batteries prior to selling as went to a family member (original OEM batteries still going strong but wanted peace of mind).
Had 5x Landcruiser Amazons prior and found my RR SDV8 AB to be every bit as reliable and trouble free as the best of the Landcruisers.
My other half has been running a 2018 MY face lift 3.0 SDV6 AB for the past 2x years. Again apart from routine servicing no other money spent on the car. Only a problem with rear executive seat arm rest sticking down which we have not yet got around to sorting.
Currently running a L460 P530 V8 SV LWB. So far apart from a few issues not understanding how things work as there is no operators manual, not had any issues but early days.
Ignore all the crap on the internet, take your time picking a car to the spec you want within your budget with a FSH and you wont go far wrong.
Just my opinion for what it is worth.

I’ve been running my 2016 for 5 years now and it’s been pretty well behaved. And I could sell it at this point and say it’s not really cost me much at all….. but….

It’s now a 9 year old car. So it’s getting some needed TLC over the next month or so. Almost Everything it needs is a service item which needs seeing to, so brakes, gearbox service, batteries etc, tyres, cosmetic bits.

It’s also needing ARB bushes, oil cooler gaskets replacing, as they look a bit damp, a new tow socket, an EGT sensor and a new fuel tank guard. Which aren’t service…… and will be ££

So at 9 years I owe it a bit of care as it’s not really cost me much over 5 years.

I reckon there a couple of grand to spend to get it back up to par which I’m on with doing now.

Also check the front knuckles at the top for cracking as per the thread on here in the tech section. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Those are all the reasons I swapped out back in the summer, plus theYear10 service is around £2K - all belts and fluids changed. These cars are big, heavy and complex, so need proper looking after and that comes at a cost.

Yeah I’ve seen that looming. But hey ho. it’s still cheaper than a new car…..the plan is to swap the gearbox oil this year then get it done again at the service so that it’s had a decent wash out! That is a main cost in the 10 year as the cost of. lR pan and the dealer rate for the lifeguard 8 is astronomical. I managed to get the ZFbranded kit off AUTODOC for £190 with 7L of oil. So when the service comes around I’ll buy another and get them to use that and not charge me for the same thing in a LR box. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
