Detailing

We all know it's expensive but is it worth it? my car looked pretty good when washed but when I didn't buy a newer one I had the old girl detailed. It now look good close up as well.

Next step is to update the infotainment system and it should be good for a few more years, still can't make my mind up which one to go for - anyone got any thoughts?.

I said it was expensive - mine was away for 3 days (apparently it should have been 4) and it cost £850. Given trade in values and such that's less than the £40k I would have to pay for a newer one. Geoff

not bad if its effects last a good while. I bet it felt a million dollars driving it off into the sunshine.

Not sure I could do without a car for 3 or 4 days though First time FFRR owner

Any decent before & after pictures to judge what £850 gets you beyond a shiny black trim 👍

I got mine done very soon after purchase in 2021 - again away 3 days and £800. Looked OK before as just retailed by a JLR main dealer - but just looked stunning after, a clear mirror finish. I opted for a ceramic coating rather than PPF which I think looks dull after a while. I was told I may need to get it recoated every year. I haven't bothered and while its no longer mirror like it still comes up lovely with the right wash approach. Downside is it take me 1/2 a day to clean the car - so it doesn't get done as often as it should!

I haven't got before/afters... But - I got it done at Ti22 in Chepstow. I've had a few cars done by James now and it all started with my Lotus Carlton back in 2009. The photo record is a bit spoilt now by the thieving hosting site...but if you want to get an idea of the difference check out his old write up on Detailing World done back in 2009.

I didn't take any pictures, the one I put up was just a lift off Instagram - ktdetailingwigan - if you're interested but there are plenty of detailing sites to look at, I've had previous cars done and been pleased. If it was just the shiney black trim (did I detect a note of sarcasm) I wouldn't have said it was value although it's nice to have the trim black instead of greyish. Geoff

I'm giving some serious thought to having mine properly detailed.

It was reasonably well prepped by the dealer and looks nice when washed but in the sun you can still see a few swirl marks and I do fancy having almost mirror finish paintwork. Did consider maybe getting a polisher but frankly it seems too much like hardwork as there's a LOT of paintwork (takes me 2 hours just to wash it Shocked ) and I know I'd get bored half way through I also know I couldn't do as good a job as a pro.

I'll probably look around more seriously in the new year but I suspect being in the south east means it will cost quite a bit more than £800/850 as I've seen some guys quoting £450 a day Big Cry 2021 D350 Fifty Edition - Carpathian Grey

I have a polisher and all the various grades of polish - but couldn't be bothered so I paid someone else to do it. Rolling with laughter well worth it car looks like it just rolled off the line but of course it is 11 years old, I had it done 5 years ago when I first got it - pleased then and pleased now. Geoff

I’ve got to find me a decent chap round here. Currently it goes for a wash every few weeks…..

There is a new chap who has set up in Burton who looks like he’s trying to build his business, so I might give him a go and see what he can do. He’s got a unit and isn’t one of the mobile guys so he should be able to do a decent job.

Not used him yet, just spotted his unit when I was at the painters merchant next door but this is his site, and looking he does a good range of services.

I know you guys know really ... but there is a HUGE difference between a good "Valet" and a "Detail" - essentially the many paint correction stages. Mike - MPx

Thanks Gary, fantastic write up, but my DIY days are behind me I'll just be putting my hand in my pocket. I only need Waze or Google so a cheaper option will suffice so long as the "directions" come over the car system and quiet Radio 2 - I listen to that most of the time occasionally Boom or Greatest Hits on DAB and very rarely (but sometimes) I stream songs via BT from my Spotify library on my iPhone. Geoff
