Chill. I will. Just need to be sure of the correct part number ( cause I don't see it posted here, or on many other threads, and there does seem to be differences ) and at this time of year ... it's not going to come to the door tomorrow either ... plus there are multiple options out there.

- Genuine replacement ... looks like £££
- Aftermarket ... less £££ ... quality ?
- Refurbished ... anyone tried that ... what gets refurbished in it?
- lock it back and be done and call it a day.

So there is still some research to be done with merit to open discussion around the options and until then it might be worth while doing a bodge to ensure I don't get caught out.

Yes, I'm being light hearted, but there will be people out there who can't splurge hundreds in the days before Christmas, so open discussion can help others. Call it cheap skating if you want, but the reality is that these L405's are dropping well into the territory of people who want to, and will, fix them themselves, and not just pay the instant replace a part prices.

There is a company on eBay that refurbishes. Cost around £100. I’ve had two refurbished by them and no further issue. I think they are called ElecFIX. Sent day one and returned day three. I word of warning using the gaffer tape method allows the selection of Park or Reverse whilst driving. Big problem.

So for the 2 refurbs, were they ever for the same unit cause it failed again after being refurbed ?

No different cars, they have full testing equipment. One had solenoid replaced and the other pin mechanism replaced.

I had a driver's door module and the CD player refurbished for my XJ6. Both came with a 5 year guarantee, didn't need to be programmed to the car and 5 years on have been fine (touch wood). That's the way I'll go if / when mine goes, but I'll keep the gaffer tape handy just in case.

Thats good to hear. I wonder if you had a fault which was going through the intermittent stage whether they would be able to identify it, or whether its an option that benefits more from when its actually failed so to speak. V8 or else ...

Door module was dead but cd player was intermittent. I think they give them a good check over and hopefully replace the bits that commonly fail.

So part was ordered ... will take a short while to get here. In the mean time the RR has poo-ed it pants and the the selector knob has died !

Dont worry, my wife wasn't driving ... I was ! (although she was in the car too) .. and luckily it did it in a friends driveway.

I'm now off to find some gaffer tape.  V8 or else ...

In the interest of sharing info: Took the centre console apart to remove the gear selector. Not difficult , just follow the workshop manual and watch this vid and you get the jist of what is needed. The vid isn’t by the book but does show all the parts to undo quite well. The only thing i would say is you only need to pull the veneer covee of the heating controls off … you don’t need to remove the whole control unit. ( if you have the older dials and not the screen setup).



The with the selector unit out , follow this vid to hold the latch in its retracted position. I initially was going to use a paper clip hooked over the outside edge to hold it back , but there is a circuit board too close and I didn’t want to short anything. So the folded gaffer tape was done instead like the video.



So it’s back to being drivable just now till the replacement part arrives. Took about 30 mins taking it easy to get the unit out and on the bench.

I think I might also send the old unit off for refurb so I have a spare.

Was thinking though that a kill switch on the solenoid would make for a good deterrent to stopping the car from being driven off. V8 or else ...
