P400e High voltage heater

I thought I’d share my experience with the P400e HV heater. I bought a Sport about 18 months ago and ended up rejecting it as the HV heater had failed and they were on 6 months back order. It’s a £1500 repair at JLR and £600 of that is labour as they quote a few hours (it took me 20 mins last time!).

I’ve recently bought my L405 P400e and got it in summer when the issue isn’t as noticeable.

Symptoms - the car SHOULD run and drive from first start on EV mode, provided there’s enough charge and the aux battery is good. If the aux battery isn’t good it can run on engine to charge it now and again. For £60 I just replaced mine.

When the HV heater has failed it will use the engine to warm the car to whatever temp you ask for via the controls. If you turn off the heating completely and it runs in EV mode normally, then this heater has failed.

I tried a couple of second hand ones and it highlighted how frequently they fail as both were the same as mine (one was manufactured in 2022!). The offending part:

It’s made by webasto and is effectively a kettle that heats the coolant. This will also run if you pre heat via the app. (Another sign it’s failed if you can’t get pre heating to work).

I couldn’t find any advice about changing it so thought I’d post this up to help other numpties without a warranty, like me. The parts about £950 at LR but I got a genuine item from land ranger services for £850. Comes with a 2 year guarantee now, which I feel I may need!

I think the dealers power down the HV battery to swap it over, which seemed overkill to me so I just swapped the item. Given it was my third time it was really easy to do.

Undo the t30 and 10mm bolts pictured:

Then disconnect all three electrical plugs which have little red tabs and are fiddly (the hardest part].

Disconnect the two water pipes with the buttons (you lose about a cup of coolant) Lift the whole thing out then swap over the carrier and pump then put it all back. Bleed the air out of your coolant and top up. The new part number (original was superseded) is LR187238

If you clear the codes then the car will go through a process of re-learning the battery usage. This will make it feel like Ev isn’t working but it’s just a process it goes through over about 20 miles (may be less/ time based). Once this is done it should work exactly as it should switching to EV mode when YOU want it to, rather than to heat your water!

Mines working great now. Hope this helps someone as it was a bottle tester for me swapping this without powering down, but seems like a ‘health and safety police’ part of the procedure. My Previous RR's!

That's a very good write up Thumbs Up
Is there a section where things like this can be stored for future reference, rather than trying multiple keywords to search or is it just me who struggles to find things Big Cry

Heroic - great write up and just what I need to do.

Out of interest what is the procedure to bleed the air from the coolant system?

Many thanks

There are three bleed screws (two to the left side of the engine and one above the FBH back left. Just open them when running to let the air out.

Incidentally, when the bonnet is up it disables EV mode so you can run the engine. My Previous RR's!
