Spot the problem!

If this has worked, the observant amongst you may have noticed from the photograph that the small trim panel behind the front wheel is not seated properly.

I bought the car a year ago and it's been like that since l bought it, didn't notice at the time!

So it's just been in for a service and l asked the dealership to fix it, as l couldn't. Turns out it has been botched! So l have tried to remove it myself, again, but to no avail. I'm wondering how much it's been botched.

Any advice on how l may remove it, without damaging too much, in order to assess if it is repairable or not, would be appreciated.

My fingers are raw from pulling plastic....

PS Does anyone recognise the wheel style?

Try warming it up with a heat gun for a while, move quickly and keep feeling the panel, you don't want it hotter than your hand can take, then try pulling it off....

I have to add a disclaimer, it is easy to bubble the paint so don't go mad...

Good luck... Thumbs Up Pete

I had a similar problem with my previous MY2017 with a badly fitted front mudflap and discovered that the panel is in fact 2 seperate sections, the base and the body colour upper section. You don't need to warm anything up but having a set of plastic trim removal tools will help a lot.

As far as I can remember, the body coloured section can be removed first as its on trim clips and then the other main piece behind has trim clips and I think a bolt or two. I suspect (as on mine) they weren't careful refitting it and damaged the trim clips and didn't bother using new clips.

You can see this more clearly in the below instructions for fitting the front mud flaps.

Thanks very much Rob 99, managed to take it apart. đź‘Ť

Does anyone have a picture of what the 2 red inserts are supposed to look like or even better, any idea of a picture/ part number? They were both covered in a melted plastic, and no, not guilty of the hideous scratches!

Hi,

Yeah looks like they have improvised with the wrong clips as it’s meant to be attached using these ones on the bottom and a rivet/bolt type fastener at the top;

Maybe cheaper just buying original as opposed to having to buy 10, here's the JLR link to them: -

Well spotted.

It’s also much easier to install it properly with the wheel liner removed (even if partly at the rear) as the fastener at the top can be a bit fiddly with the liner in place.

Actually, scrap everything I said, just noticed you’ve got an L405 - your profile says 2011 but clearly the photo is the later model. And it’s posted in the 405 threads Whistle

Sorry!!

Thanks for your comments guys, much appreciated. I think the parts l need are 219A38 but I'm not sure as it looks like l only have broken bits. I'l call the local dealer tomorrow or I may attempt to look at the other side tomorrow but in my experience, that's asking for trouble! Keep you updated on progress.

John.

Nope, you don't "have to" heat it up but the idea behind it is pertinent to this time of year, if you pull them off in these cold conditions the panels are well known to snap...!! Pete
