Which Diff. Fluid for '05 4.2 SC?

Hello, new to my L322 and therefore to FFRR.

2005 seems to be an awkward year to find parts/maintenance kits easily, with most items for 4.2 SC being listed as '06 onwards; I always approach with caution to make sure I'm getting the right bits.

My first post is just to do with the correct Differential Fluid for this car. It has the earlier locking diff and hill descent buttons - separate buttons either side and aft of the gear shifter - not the later terrain response twist wheel.

The 2 fluids I've come across are either 75w90 or 75w140, but I'm not finding a definitive answer.

Any input very welcome.

Hi, again welcome, I too am an SC owner and I had the same questions as yourself.

To help your car is the MY06 model available from roughly autumn 2005 to autumn 2006. Prior to that were the BMW cars with the BMW V8, and after the MY07 cars with terrain response and epb among other improvements.

I am not aware that any MY06 cars had the electronic rear diff the switches either side of the shift, on the left is the HDC on the right is to switch between high and low gears.

You will need both manuals 02-05 and 07-10, both available in the wiki.

All of us on here with the MY06 are keen fans and I think you will find that many have detailed their experiences in "My Range Rover" including Superspoons, myself and one of the most detailed is from dhallworth

Enjoy the future it is fun if a little frustrating at times.

Thank you, David - I've definitely ended up in the right place..!

Really appreciate the clarification on the model year/what it is referred to predominantly; had been a bit of a headscratcher already when trying to nail down parts/numbers. I was aware it was post-BMW, and had set my heart on an AJV8 SC as I'd heard they're a pretty tough old unit - mine seems to get around very well for one with a 'pleasant' mileage of 140k. So pleased with that so far.

Will revert to the posts you mention, sounds as though there is info a'plenty to get me going.

Most recent MOT suggests the rear sills are enjoying an excessive dose of rust, in 'non prescribed area'. I'm not sure if this means a structural - and therefore MOT failure area - or on the periphery. I will take a good look either way. Thanks!

There is lots on here about rust in the rear cills so do your research.
If the MOT tester highlights rust then you can be sure that it will be quite serious as they tend to rust behind the plastic covers, which the tester is not allowed to remove.

My advice is to remove the cill cover and the wheel arch liner to have a good look. Near side is usually the worst.
