Thoughts....

Looking to bite the bullet on a 405 at some point in the future. After doing a lot of research on here, it appears that a post 2020 Ingenium engine (non Ford) is the best bet. Either the 3 ltr or the 4.4 V8 diesel. Keen to know that post the new design on the timing chain, has there been many other chains snap post the modification happened ? This is one of my main reasons for looking at a 2020 or newer year. On the DPF front I get that driving style plays a big part with the DPF cycle and oil dilution. Is there anywhere in the menu on the car itself that you can navigate to see where the DPF is at ? By this can you a reading where you can tell it would be a good idea to sit on the motorway for 30 mins to enable it to cycle ? Or can you buy a diagnostic reader and get readings that way ? I think if we do buy one then it needs to be a approved JLR dealer car (for whats that worth) so at least you then have 12 months cover if it is a lemon. Thanks for any suggestions, mind field the internet at times.....

I would steer clear of anything with an ingenium badge on it if it were my choice... SDV8 all the way! Youll need something like an IID tool to read soot levels Thumbs Up

I thought the Ingeniums were straight six 3 litres jobs, badged D300/D350?

There's a lot of Ingenium powered cars on auto trader needing new engines. That being said, there's a lot of cars that have them installed.

Ingenium is JLRs in house built modular diesel engine, in 4 and 6 cylinder guise that haven't been around all that long

The V8 and V6 diesels originated from Ford a long time ago (2004 ish for the original base) 2019 MY SDV8 Autobiography in Velocity Blue

Thanks BLT Dave. I was advised to not look down the v8 or V6 route as these engines are no longer about or made. Hence get the Ingenium post 2020.

The SDV8 is a Ford derived lump and has a great reputation...

The 6 cylinder Ingenium is a 4 cylinder with 2 added so has all the same issues the 2.0 has! And has an appauling reputation sir... Rolling Eyes

I know and appreciate the failure rates are probably low in the grand scheme of things but just seems like a nightmare......... Am i right in thinking though, if the SDV8 goes pop, they are not made anymore and parts are very hard to get hold of for the engine ?

This is true - if you have an engine destroy itself then it's a car write off. However, it's not a regular occurrence nowadays and the 'V' engines have good reputations.

Alternatively, if you get an Ingenium car then you could get a new engine - a warrantied car would cover it. On the balance of probabilities, in either option I would say you'll have other problems before the engines blow!

Try driving both and see which you prefer, do the costs etc. An Ingenium car being newer will be more expensive to buy and not be any more car for the money 2019 MY SDV8 Autobiography in Velocity Blue

understood and thanks. I had a D3 for a number of years so know how needy they can be. But with proper maintence and attention they can also be a fantastic car to own. I now have a 5 year old Ssangyong Rexton that i bought from new, it has had 34 lots of warranty work and has been somewhat of a joke. Even now the blind spot warning system has failed and the dealer have had to order special tools in from (now KGM) to fix it. To be fair, other than my time and trips to the dealer Ssangyong have paid out for everything......

They dont make any parts for any of the engines... Never have... The inginium engines are now defunct too and whats more, JLR closed the factory that made them in WALES so god only knows where JLR get their replacements from nowadays...

For every one SDV8 that fails i guess there will be upwards of a thousand ingenium failures looking at just how many thousands of buy back cars JLR have in airfields and dealer carparks across the country!

Makes you wonder how they stay in business. I have 5 friends all buy the D5 (3litre V6) i think. 3 have had new engines via JLR. I will take a look in more detail to the SDV8 then. Its funny as the local JLR specialist near me in Alwnick said that they have seen next to no issues with the ingenium engines, just issues with DPF. But i guess most are so new, they will be under warranty still with JLR to sort out

2019 Range Rover Autobiography SDV8 Aintree Green

The Ingenium sixes (very much still made, in Wolverhampton) are nice engines and I doubt they’re actually any less reliable than anything else (especially if you change oil regularly). DPFs are the big problem in the transverse-engined stuff (also Ingenium, but four cylinder).

The Lion V6 and V8 diesels were all built by Ford (in Dagenham and Chihuahua), the petrol AJ-V8 was built at Ford Bridgend, until it shut, when JLR set up a line at Wolverhampton.

If you don’t mind me saying that if you are looking for a less stressful ownership experience you might consider some other choices in the mix? For example I was in an I Pace today and have to say I was quite impressed.

I know I’ll be burnt at the stake for saying that here but the maintenance will be much lower.
