Suddenly car would stop shifting up from first gear.

Hi Everyone,


L322 TD6 5L40E 2004

Driving home this evening, come off the Motorway after 20 miles stopped at red lights, car behaved up to the red light, then had to travel last 1/2 mile in 1st gear as the car would not shift out of first gear when in Drive or manual override (2 or 3 or 4 can be selected on the dash when moving). Got home, reverse neutral and park still working. The transmission had logged a fault: Trans fail safe mode.

Used IIDTool to clear faults. Test drive whilst still hot, still only have 1st, reverse, neutral and park available.

Allowed car to cool overnight, fully charged battery as precaution, test drive from cold, still same fault.

Checked resistances from EAT ECU connector C1835. All within spec (allowing for slight resistance of leads from ECU to gearbox)
Shift valve solenoid A 16.7 ohm
Shift valve solenoid B 17.2 ohm
Shift valve solenoid C 16.9 ohm
TCC PWM solenoid 11.7 ohm
Pressure regulator solenoid 4.8 ohm
Input shaft speed sensor 407.0 ohm
Output shaft speed sensor 399.0 ohm
Temperature sensor 2180.0 ohm

EAT ECU Output
Solenoid A B C
D off on off
M1 off on on
M2 on on on


IID transmission live values gives realistic oil temperature, engine speed turbine speed an output shaft speed.


Any helpful suggestions gratefully appreciated.

Sounds like an issue with the Second Clutch.

The Second Clutch is used in 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th gears but not in 1st & Reverse.

Hi Phil, thanks for the tip and pointing to where to look.


I got around to dropping the valve block and found the 1-2 shift valve stuck in the applied position.




Further striping down found the spring in the 2nd clutch accumulator broken

The resultant sharp end of the spring had been cutting into the aluminium spring seat and creating swarf which can be seem on the cotton bud.

I flushed the valve block without taking it apart and replaced the spring. All seem OK the car has been running about 1000 mile without any shifting problems.

Very Happy I was busy and I don't have the equipment or space to strip down an automatic gearbox. And because of the low value it wasn't worth paying £2500 for a recon box with 12 month warranty. So it was SORN and left until I had spare time.
