Suspension unable to lift to test bags for leak

Afternoon all,

Driving along earlier quite happily then noticed at low speed the car was levelling every so often and could hear the compressor going, didn't think much of it.

I have noticed it being a bit lower at home when parked but also didn't think too much of it(!) as it raised fine. However now when driving now the car is at bump stops and you can see in the pictures lower at the front (equally on both sides). Now it won't raise at all at the front and I can hear a constant hiss from the front offside/drivers suspension, exacerbating by turning the wheel.

I'd like to do the soap test but because even in off road height, it won't raise, I can't check if it is a leak.

Attached is a health check I did in June and you can see the bag is pretty perished - suspect original.

Am I safe to order the usual BWI or Dunlop parts (both sides) or do you recon I should get the fault confirmed first? Perhaps the leak is so bad it can't even raise as the compressor can't keep up?

I have a GAP but the forum member I bought it off is travelling and it is locked with a password for now...

Yep, change the bag, that line of bumpy stuff around the shock is pure road dust that has set like rock and wears the bags out, when you are back to normal, stick it in off road height and clean all that debris away.... Thumbs Up Pete

I thought as much. £600 from Island, Dunlop (gonna take the risk instead of BWI and sounds like they're not as bad as years gone by) both sides with new bolts and gaskets. Will see how it goes (local garage doing it as I don't have a driveway/time to do it myself) L322 2007 S/C 4.2L

Try and get it aligned afterwards, although in theory you can swap them out and if you’re diligent can avoid knocking the tracking out by much it’s worth making sure as it will only end up with two worn front tyres if left.

I'd replace both sides as if one side has deteriorated the other will not be far behind. Also as your's has the non CVD dampers I'd replace the whole strut and not just the bag. Changing a strut should not effect the toe settings to any significant degree if at all. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Much better. Thanks for advice all.

£820 all in for both sides with Dunlop & 3 hours labour at local garage. Seems a much better ride now too...I'm only 4k miles a year so hopefully they'll last!
